At a daycare that I worked at there was a 16 month old who did this. We tried ignoring it, telling him it wasn't o.k, putting him in a 'time out'. None of it worked and he kept getting worse. I worked there for 2 months and he was still doing it when I left; so I don't know how long it lasted.

With my daughter she started doing it and when I ignored it it started getting worse. I decided to try something totally different. I did give her a dirty look but I just asked her if she needed a hug, and I asked her if she was frustrated. She didn't say anything but I gave her a hug and was just sympathetic to her. After I gave her a hug she just started playing again.

So you could try it. I am sure it won't work for every child though.

When my son did that, he did NOT get what he wanted AND gained himself a time out. Be consistant, and don't give in.

both my girls have had this problem. the best thing i found was to make sure your child is safe and then leave him/her too calm down. if your child receives attention when he/she screams for it, then every time they want it they will scream. if you dont give them your attention while screaming they will learn that it is not the way to get what they want.
