son won't stay in bed to fall asleep

my son is 2 and a half, he's been in his big boy bed for a while, and at first he did stay in his bed until he fell asleep. but ever since he learned how to get out of his bed, he won't anymore. we have a bed time routine. and after a couple minutes of cuddle/bedtime story time, i put him in his bed and like less than a minute he gets out. this can go on for an hour or so. i just can't get him to stay in his bed until he falls asleep anymore. HELP!

With my daughter we had some rough nights like that. We just kept putting her back in bed and saying it's bedtime. She'd use excuses of having to pee, being thirsty, whatever she could think of to get out. We just said, no. Bedtime. Even the potty thing...after she went once, nope. Sounds like you're consistently putting him back in though. That's good. We just made it as no big deal as possible. The more we got upset, the more she cried, the longer she stayed up and tried to get out. We were lucky though. She REALLY wanted to stay in bed and be quiet for younger siblings. When I had her brother still in my belly she was quiet for them. Of course, we did trick her a couple times and say....."you don't HAVE to fall asleep. You can stay awake if you're quiet and hold still. Close your eyes, but keep your ears open REALLY big so you stay awake." Within ten minutes she was out. Truly if you just keep putting him in bed, he'll eventually give up. It was a whole month of out of bed and crying for us before she just decided it wasn't worth her effort.
