Make sure it has some walls around. Pillows or gates, make sure you know that he is a sleep, check it out before you go down and monitor on. Once he is a sleep on it he'll be fine for tha night. And later when he walks and climbs well remove all tha pillows/ gates.

the general rule of thumb i've heard is once they start trying to climb out of their crib, it's time for a change. my friends daughter is 18 months and she just converted her crib to a day bed. the first couple of days were a bit weird, but she transitioned just fine. my son is 13 months, so he's not ready yet, but i'm afraid it'll only be a couple more months before he is!

We transitioned our son at 2 1/2yrs old. We moved our son from his crib right into a twin size bed. We wanted o bypass the toddler bed in order to help him avoid too many adjustments at such a young age. We went with a twin size bed that had a pull out trundle bed. We pulled the trundle bed out completely and had him sleep on the twin. It worked out great. The reason we didn't use a bed rail is because we were afraid of him possible rolling out in his sleep and getting caught in between the space and possible choking. We don't know if it can happen but we did not take any chances. To us it just wasn't worth it. When first started out in the bed we made sure he was asleep first. Now we check in on him every time we get up at night. So far no incidents at all. He seems to really like his bed. When you start the transition make sure you make it a fun and happy place for him to sleep. Don't ever use his bed as his time out area. Set up a nice little routine to help relax him before he goes to sleep. For instance if you read books to him at night, lay him down in his bed and start reading the books. Then tuck him in and tell him you will stay with him until he falls asleep if he seems apprehensive. Good luck.

So far both my older boys moved into a toddler bed at 15 months old. It was a little hard at first but didn't take long for them to get use to the idea. The main reason why my very oldest was put into a bed at 15 months the reason is because we needed the crib for his 3 month old brother at the time. Since we moved him at 15 months we did it to our middle son as well no problem. We plan on doing the same for our youngest right now especially because we'll be needing the crib for his baby brother who'll be around 3 months old when he's 15 months old.
Oh and my oldest for the first week wouldn't fall asleep in the bed he rather fall asleep on the floor or on his huge stuff frog so we would put him into his bed after falling asleep and he finally caught one.
Good Luck!

Kianna has been sleeping in her room on her dd bed since when she was one. It's really when you feel like she/he is ready. But they can also get to old for the crib and climb out and get hurt. Just keep your eyes on it.
Hope it helps.
