why is my three year old starting to bite his fingernails

My son is almost 3, and has bitten his nails since he was old enough to bite! Family and friends would comment on how unbelievable it was that a baby so tiny was biting his nails. I do not understand, because neither my husband, myself, our siblings or our parents were nail biters. I with some kids, they're just born with certain habits!

My daughter will do this if her nails aren't clipped properly or if I let them get too long. If this doesn't seem to be the case, I agree that it is probably a nervous habit (are there triggers for it?) For example does he bite his nails when he is left alone with a sitter, or at bedtime, etc.? He could be doing it out of boredom as well. Good luck.

My daughter seemed to bite her nails since about 3ish too and I am not sure why. I thought it was b/c she was bored or it was habitual. I kept on telling her that she should not bite her nails, that it was yucky ;) She'll be 4 in Apr. and barely bites her nails, there's hope yet ;)

I'm a nail bitter, I started when I was about 6, it's a stress habit and also a compulsion. try to discourage him, its a hard habit to knock
