My son is almost 3, and has bitten his nails since he was old enough to bite! Family and friends would comment on how unbelievable it was that a baby so tiny was biting his nails. I do not understand, because neither my husband, myself, our siblings or our parents were nail biters. I with some kids, they're just born with certain habits!

My daughter will do this if her nails aren't clipped properly or if I let them get too long. If this doesn't seem to be the case, I agree that it is probably a nervous habit (are there triggers for it?) For example does he bite his nails when he is left alone with a sitter, or at bedtime, etc.? He could be doing it out of boredom as well. Good luck.

My daughter seemed to bite her nails since about 3ish too and I am not sure why. I thought it was b/c she was bored or it was habitual. I kept on telling her that she should not bite her nails, that it was yucky ;) She'll be 4 in Apr. and barely bites her nails, there's hope yet ;)

I'm a nail bitter, I started when I was about 6, it's a stress habit and also a compulsion. try to discourage him, its a hard habit to knock
