22 month old afraid to ride in car

My son has recently started freaking out when he is in the car. He cries and reaches for me until i reach back and hold his hand. This has been going on for about a week. Then today on our way home from my families cabin i watched his face in my rear view mirror and he was terrified.... i have never seen him make such a scared face and almost just freeze up while i was driving and not holding his hand. We have never gotten in an accident so i dont know where his fear is really coming from. I have had some car troubles in the last 3 or so weeks but i dont know how he could even feel affected by that. Please give me any feedback you can. Im just worried for my little boy.

One of my daughters HATED being in the car, especially at night...She would scream like someone was trying to kill her. It got to the point I hardly left the house and forget going somewhere at night. Check the carseat and make sure there is nothing in the cushion that is poking him. If you can you might want to try a portable dvd player with his favorite movie playing..Luckey this was just a phase that my daughter when thru. but until she got over it, I NEVER left the house without her DVD player
