does anybody's twins speak their own language to each other and not talk properly at all?

they have started saying a few words on their own now, if they are separated then they speak toddler language and when they are together they go back to twin language. My health visitor has advised me to wait until they start nursery in January and see if they can be put into separate classes to deal with separation anxiety and help them to develop individually rather then spending all there time playing with each other and excluding other children. I think part of it is that they are lazy, they know half the time they have no need to talk because there older brother will either ask for something or say it for them. I'm hoping when he starts school in 2 weeks they will learn to start asking for things themselves instead of relying on him.

Hey There,

I also have twin boys who are 16 months at the moment they say hello, mumma, dadda, bye but the rest is all noises that they say to each other but they seem to no what the other one is saying.. my Twins both have a mild hearing loss due to being 9 weeks prem.. maybe i would talk to your health vistator about it.. It may just be because they are happy chatting like that to each other.. They say twins have there own language!! xxx

I have 2 y/o twin boys who definitely have their own language with each other. I find it very cute but frustrating at times as well. Twins are known to have developmental delay in their verbal skills.... primarily due to their "twin talk". We, as parents, also tend to give in and become enablers because we can decipher "their" language. We get what they want even if they do not speak the word correctly. I also have a 5 y/o who speaks for my twins as well. Triple whammy!!!!! The twins do not get motivated to speak properly.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just as long as they continue to meet their developmental milestones and continue to progress in their verbal skills. I was worried about my twins because they seemed so far behind my oldest son. I also got a number to a speech therapist for evaluation. As soon as I did that, the twins started blossoming in their speech. They are still not where I want them to be but they continue to progress. Progression in skills is the key.

Continue to read to them, develop their verbal skills by repeating the "correct" words to them. They will eventually catch on.

my twins had several ear infections by the time they were a year old-around eight a peice. anyway they had some hearing problems that was corrected with their first of three sets of tubes. Around age 18 months to 2 years they started speech theropy and by the time they were 3 they were right on target. I am a nurse that works with different theropist and according to what i understand it is not uncommon for twins to be somewhat delayed in speech.

I have b/g twins that will be 3 in October and I know that they have their own language, it is the cutest thing...I can sit outside of their room and listen to them speak in a way I can not understand and they laugh and laugh, I also believe they like to plot their next adventure together because one says something they giggle and run in different directions knowing I am the only one there and have to decide which way I should go. In the last 4 months of Speech Therapy my boy has gained so much he is considered borderline and my girl has not gained much at all. The therapist and I have decided to do separate sessions so my daughter does not get interrruptions from my son and I have seen some improvements in her speech. You always have the right to decide what is best for your children and you need to discuss your options with your pediatrician and when possible the speech therapist. Never be afraid to tell them what is working and what is not and if separate therapy time is what you need make that known...i don't know what state you are in but there should be different programs that maybe able to help you assessing your childrens speach and in understanding you and your childrens rights.

My oldest set of twins spoke to each other in their very own language, no doubt about that! But mine actually had their own language, words only they understood until they started really talking (in English, lol). I'd speak to my pediatrician if I were you about your concerns. My twin boys are 2. I know some of the things that they say, but if they are playing by themselves, it sounds like they have a whole language to themselves. It's so cute. I am though going to set up an appointment and them looked at.

Hi Amanda. My twins also had there own vocabulary till they were I think 4 or 5 then it just disappeared. They are 32 yrs old now so there's hope

my twins are 20mths old and when they were 18 mths my pediatrician gave me a number to call so they can get speech therapy. i just called last week because i thought it was still too early for them. they have an appointment this week so we will see how that goes. In my opinion i think you should see your dr again so he can tell you exactly what to do.

our schools have speech therapist in them in. i live in kentucky. maybe you could check into that. my boys had a type of jibberish they "talked" together. to this day i believe they understood every word the other one said. no one could really understand them until they were 2 1/2 or 3, but i started understanding them at 2, i guess. daycare helped my boys to talk more. my baby boy still talks like a baby and they are 6 yrs old now. people constantly ask him to repeat himself. my oldest always spoke for him. other people always asked him what his brother was trying to say. that is the one thing i would've stopped if i could go back. it really hampered my little one, maybe that's why they wouldn't see one of your boys, they were afraid of one getting ahead and speaking for the other one. good luck to you and hope i helped you out.

they were referred to speech therapy over a year ago and the appointment came through in march but one of my twins broke his leg so they decided that there was no point seeing the other twin and cancelled the appointments and was told to get another appointment with a paeditriction to refer them back to speech therapy. I have no idea why they wouldn't see just the one twin, I would have thought that it would be better to start one talking so the other would copy. After all this it will be about another year before they get another appointment and they are supposed to start preschool in January. I'm now worried that they won't be understood and be left out. We've tried saying to them that they can have something if they say please or what their asking for but they end up not wanting it in the end. One twin did start talking and saying digger bye bye and little words but he's totally stopped now and is just making noises now or screeching.

Hi Amanda! I'm not quite sure of what state you reside in, so I'm not sure in regards to the type of services that are offered in your hometown. However, you may want to speak to your pediatrician to address your concerns; it may be recommended that the children see a speech therapist; which could be provided through the early childhood department of your school district at no cost to you.

Have you spoken to your doctor about that? my twins are b/g and will be 3 in november. They both speak toddler english (you can figure it out if you try) and he is about 6 months behind her in vocabulary, I think I would be concerned that there may be a medical reason for them not talking at all if I were you.....

That said, my son didn't really want to talk, so I spent three months mor or less forcing him, tell him that he could have the cookie if said, "cookie" things like that, and now he's nearly caught up with his sister.
