Feeding Questions/Problems

My twins are 21 weeks now and we have been attempting to eat cereal for about two and a half weeks. Sometimes they spit it out or turn their heads, sometime they sit there and scream with it in their mouth until it falls out or we put a bottle in their mouth and sometimes they actually eat it... Meal time is very frustrating and just need some advise.
We feed cereal once a day, just before bed along with 4 oz of formula (they normally get 6oz) This is about 2 to 2 1/2 hours after they last ate last so I know they are not starving. Just not sure if I should be trying to feed them a little with each meal along with their reguar 6 oz bottle or just continue to try what we are doing and hopefully they will catch on eventually..

Our kids didn't like the oatmeal cereal, we had to use rice cereal instead. We started out putting it in their bottle of formula then gradually mixing it w/ formula in a bowl and feeding it to them that way. They had constipation problems with oatmeal and rice worked out much better!

don't bother wasing your time with solids until they are close to 6 months. when they see you eating and they open their mouth, and act like they want some, then they're ready. if they do not take regular bites, opening their mouth when it comes close, they're not ready.

My girls did the exact same thing when we tried cereal so we quit b/c they would not take it and it was more frustrating than anything so we starting only giving them cereal in their bottle before bed and then they slept better also...now they are 5 1/2 months old and about 2 1/2 weeks ago I tried again and they liked it and now they are eating fruit and cereal for breakfast, bottles in between and veggies and cereal for supper but I did notice they like the cereal much better if I make it with baby apple juice instead of water and now I also just add the veggies or fruit right in with the cereal and they love it :) Hope this helps

I started mine on pureed fruit and vegetables before I did the cereals they don't always like the texture of the cereals mine hated the baby packets and jars so would only take home made food.
some babies are still not ready for solids at 21 weeks either just take it slowly.
good luck

I don't know how you feel about trying to give it to them in their bottles. Some moms think it is the lazy way out and takes away from their children developing spoon skills and causes them to overeat, etc. I spoon fed mine cereal in the morning and baby food at lunch. But for their bottle before bed we added cereal and a little fruit juice. We mixed it to a somwhat thin consistency, and cut a slightly bigger opening in the nipple. With mine it was just that by that time they were tired and didn't want to do the work it took to eat with a spoon. And the little bit of fruit juice helped to sweeten it and make it a little tastier. It is true that some babies just don't like it though. I have two nieces from two different sets of parents and neither would ever take baby cereal.

Try switching their cereal feeding to the morning in btwn their first two bottles or right before morning nap. A lot of babies are already a little fussy right before bed.

They need the cereal. My grandson loves his cereal now. He is 9 months now. I had twins they are now31 years old.

My daughter had the same problem with her son at first.

We tried thinning it out a little tried adding a little fruit for flavor. And a lot of patience.

None of my children have liked baby cereal... I tried for a while and then just moved straight to baby food.. I also didn't start until they were 6 months old.

Hi there my twins started eating cereal at 4months (16 weeks) in the morning and from 5 months (21 weeks) they started eating a balanced meal, cereal in the morning, veggies for lunch and then cereal again for supper. They do enjoy a yogurt in between meals. They are very good with the eating, but do not want to drink milk anymore...They are 9 months now, and weighs about 8.3kg.

They might not be ready yet but my boys (also 21 weeks) don't really like the cereal all that much so I've been mixing baby food in with it. Bananas, sweet potatoes, etc and they eat it up. I just make sure they get it after a bottle and before they become too tired. I've started feeding them twice a day, "breakfast" about an hour after they wake and get a bottle (usually about 6 oz) and "dinner" anywhere around 5-7. The "dinner" feeding is varying in time because they are starting to drop the late afternoon nap (usually slept from 6-7) and I can feed them around 7 and they are usually up for about another hour. (I'm still waking them around 10 so they stay nice and full all night!) Try mixing it with other food and see if that helps!

Perhaps they are not quite ready yet - you could try waiting a bit longer and then try again to avoid the frustration. Otherwise, just keep trying and they will eventually get the hang of it. Good luck! :)
