Feeding schedule for twins

I have asked this question before, but it appears to have disappeared into a black hole.

Anyway, my twins were born at 28 weeks and are now 12 months old (9 months corrected). I'm trying to get them onto a regular eating schedule and the suggested pattern is breakfast, milk, lunch, milk, supper, milk. The last milk feed before bed is supposedly very important and they still need a minimum of 500ml a day. My two get up at 7am and go to bed at 7pm. How on earth am I supposed to fit all those meals into one day! I can't feed them every 2 1/2 hours, especially now that they insist on feeding themselves and a meal takes 45 minutes instead of 10 mins. Any ideas/suggestions? How do other moms do it?

My twins are almost 15 months old and also up from 7 to 7. This is how I do it.

7am- milk, fruit, cheerios

9:30am- snack (juice, crackers, etc)

11am- milk, meat, veggie, fruit

1:30pm- snack (juice, cheese, dairy, etc)

3pm- milk, meat, veggie, fruit

5pm- snack

7pm- milk

I really feel like I'm feeding them all day -- probably b/c I am. We squeeze naps in at noon if we're doing one per day or at 10 and 2 if we're doing 2 per day. I give them 6oz milk each time. We don't always do all 3 snacks. Sometimes, nap time interferes. At least 2 per day though. The key for me is milk every 4 hours, since they're on a 12 hour day, and just build from that.. That's how I've been doing it since they were about 7 months and it works beautifully.. Good luck!!

Give them a bottle first and then let them play with their food they will only ever eat what they need to and if you give them their bottle first you know that way that they are still getting their nutrience

My twins are 15 months old. They get milk when they get up in the morning, after naps, and before bed. They eat at regular meal times, have a mid day snack, and I also give milk with lunch and dinner (I have trouble getting enough milk into them, so I offer it a lot.) That has always worked for us.

Relax, you know your children better than anyone...my twins are now 17yrs old and most days you just have to do what works best for you. You won't be perfect and no one expects you to be. As long as your twins are thriving and healthy you are fine. Mine were also born at 28 weeks and they have been doing fine ever since. Just go with the flow and you all will be fine :)

My girls are 9 months old and they have an early am milk feeding, breakfast at about 8am, lunch around noon, milk feeding after naptime, dinner at about 4pm, then milk feeding again before bed. Most days it feels like I am feeding and cleaning kids all day long (I also have a 3 1/2 year old son).

Mine are 2 now, and I recommend the same thing, if something is working for you, go with it. I have to hold back the milk cups at mealtime for all four of my kids and wait until they are all done eating because if the twins see the older ones drinking, they want some too and then they won`t finish their meal.

Above all, remember this is only temporary. Good Luck! My twins are now 19. I always kept them on the same schedule. Have fun!

Hi Alda, my twins were born two months early and up until they were 3 months old ate every 2 1/2 hours 24/7 and it took me about an hour to feed and change them both. At three months we started them on a tiny bit of cereal before bed and they started sleeping all night - generally about 13 hours. When they finally got so they could eat some foods we did breakfast and a bottle, lunch and a bottle, sometimes a snack in the afternoon, supper then about five with a bottle afterward and then they shared a large can (28 ounce) of fruit cocktail and a bottle then as well. Are they getting close to normal size or are they still pretty small?

Well what my husband and I do is pick easier foods for our boys to feed themselves and give "snacks" between regular meals. That's how we get in the fruits and veggies. Our boys get up at 8 and are in bed by 8:30. If I were you I would decide which is more important to get in and go from there. If your doc says they have to have all the milk then by all means make sure they get that. You could always go down to two solid meals a day with the three milk "meals". I remember for a while we did: Breakfast-Milk-Snack-Milk-Dinner-Milk

At that point we were having only the two meals and having a "snack" at lunchtime which was usually a fruit and a cracker of somekind (graham, goldfish, wheatthins) I hope this helps.

Yeah, every child is different. I found I couldn't give milk with their meal because they'd get full and wouldn't eat. Then my doc said water was better with the meal because since they can't quite brush their teeth it would be a good cleanse for their teeth.

Thanks Theresa. I was giving them milk with their meals and then giving them cheese/fruit/crackers etc for snacks. The problem is that breakfast was at 7am, lunch at 10:30 - 11:00 and supper at 14:00 - 14:30. I wanted to space their meals so that they would have lunch at lunchtime and supper at suppertime. My health visitor said that I should stop giving them milk with their meals, because then they won't eat enough solids, and give them milk as a snack. I actually found they ate more when I gave them milk with their meals though. I think I should just do my own thing and not listen to her lol :)

My twins are 14.5 months old and they've been following a routine schedule of milk when they first get up (6 am) - breakfast about an hour later - water/fruit snack mid morning - lunch/milk - juice/crackers afternoon snack - dinner/water - milk before bed time...it seems to work for us.
