That's about the age we sleep trained our boys. It takes a few weeks, but be consistent and they will get used to the idea. Have a good bedtime and nap routine. Do the same thing everyday. Put them to bed, if they start crying, go in and soothe them but don't pick them up! It takes time and patience, but keep doing that until they go to bed on their own. My boys have little blankies they sleep with that helped them to sleep too, they still use them. They need to learn how to go to bed on their out without help from mom.

Well it depends how old they are. But if you constantly take them out of their cribs everytime they cry, they are going to expect you to do it all the time. My boys were in their cribs the second night they were home. They shared a crib till they were about 3-4 months old, then we switched them to their own.
Some parents say its bad to let your babies cry. But in my opinion, children need structure, and will thrive in it. Be consistent! When its bedtime, that means its bedtime! Let them cry a little, go in and sooth them back to sleep. Without picking them up, and without talking. Rub their head or back, and let them calm down till they go back to sleep and walk out. If they cry again, do it again. This is how I sleep trained my twins. And now they are great sleepers! They are almost 2 1/2 and take one 3 hour nap in the afternoon and sleep 10-11 hours at night.

How old are they? I know it was very hard for us the first 2 weeks but we stuck to it even though it was harder on us. We just kept putting them back in the crib and after a few weeks they were ok. Good luck and keep trying. It will happen.
