hi. i have non identical 5 month old twin boys george and mark. they were born at 37+5 and were perfect t 6lb10 and 7lb4. i went in to be induced and it turned out that i was 3cm dilated and all they needed to do was break my waters. George was born 5 hours later and mark 43 mins later by emergency c section. i know how you feel i wanted them out by 30 weeks but it is true the longer they are inside the better they are when born. we were let out of hospital the next day and that was after the section. good luck x

I was told by many doctors that "full term" for twins is 37 weeks. My twins were born at 36 weeks, 6 days, but that was after 3 months of bedrest and pre-term labor. They tried to come at 24 weeks, 1 day, but fortunately a lot of medication stopped the contractions and they stayed put!

my identical girls were 5wks early. this was due to the fact that i developed pre eclampsia. your body and your doctors will let you know if you go full term or have them early. the longer you go the better it is as your bubs develop much better. my girls were in hospital for an extra 2 wks after birth as they had to come to a proper weight for them to be discharged. good luck with your pregnancy. kylie

I only know one person who carried her twins to 39 weeks just a few days shy of 40 weeks so it's possible but I had my twin girls at 34 weeks.

Congratulations! It really varies. My boys came at 37 1/2 weeks, no problems in the pregnancy, and no early labour at all. They actually induced them. Another mom I know had hers at 38 weeks, and she had a planned C-section. My doula told me to drink lots of water and eat lots of fibre and protein and it helps the uterus stay strong and healthy. Don't know if that's true, but I followed the instructions anyway!

mine tried to come at 21 weeks after I had laser surgery on their placenta for TTTS Dr. stopped the contractions with drugs and then at 33 weeks they tried to come again. The contractions stopped on their own and I was 2cm for 3 weeks with braxton hicks every 5 min. and on bed rest. They came at 36 weeks. 2 days before scheduled.

I think it all depends on your body and what you're doctor feels comfortible with. Everyone is different as is every pregnancy. I've heard of people going full term and then other's having them really early.
I had my b/g twins at 33 wks 6 days. So they were six weeks early.

i was due may 5th, my c-section was scheduled to happen at 38 weeks, however i was put on bed rest on march 3rd and the twins came april 2nd (35 weeks). i have heard of people going full term i didn't not because my body thought i was at 40 weeks. the girls r healthy and weighed 5 lbs 4oz, with no problems thus far. they were in the nicu for a little just until they could suck, breath swallow.

My b/g twins are now 3 months old. I went into labor at 31 weeks and had to stay in the hospital, they finally got it all under control and I was released but with strict bedrest orders. Needless to say I really didnt follow that, I just couldnt lay around, it made me feel worse and I ended up having to be induced at 38 weeks! Emma was 6 lbs 9 oz 20 1/2 inches and Kayden was 5 lbs 10 oz 19 inches. They followed right behind me back into the room with no NICU time or complications whatsoever. Just be positive and listen to your body!

I carried mine full term. I had a scheduled csection at 37 and a half weeks because they were getting so big. We had planned on 38 and a half weeks. But my friend only carried hers to 29ish weeks bc of complications. My cousin went into labor early at around 35ish weeks. I think it just depends on the person.

In response to the last post (Tracy), that is very true about preemies. My friend's twin boys were born at 28 weeks, and while they were just under 2lbs. a piece and spent 3 months in the NICU, they are happy and healthy 13 month old little boys now. They only weigh 13 and 16lb.s now, but they do most things a 13 month old normally does... and will have caught up fully by 2 years, as most preemies normally do!

My twins came at 37.5 weeks (I was induced). One was 7 lbs 5 oz the other 6 lbs 13 oz. My brother-in-law was a twin and he came at 40 weeks (at a whopping 8lbs!!) but most doctors (in Canada) will induce around 38 weeks... unless you request otherwise.
Just so you know if you have access to a full neonatal intensive care unit babies born as early as 24 weeks usually make it with no serious repercussions. Of course you wouldn't want to go that route as your babies would likely need to stay in the hospital for weeks to get healthy enough to go home. It is also insanely expensive and not easy on the parents who don't get to experience that bounding time.

At 23 three weeks and with a nearly 2 year old girl at home the aches and pains are so much different than with her. While I hope to keep them in as long as I can I too long for the delivery of my boys. Thank you for asking the question it was good to hear from other moms on this issue.

i had my twins at 36 weeks. because of my size when becoming pregnant they were going to preform a c-section at 37 weeks because i could not give birth naturally :( both boys were born healthy, never went to icu, straight to newborn nursery. don't worry. i read were someone wrote it depends on your lifestyle, that is so true. if you are a busy body, then you will most likely labor early :) that would be me, went into labor at home on a sunday night (never knew it) went to doctor for check up next day dialated to a 5! good luck and don't worry, having twins isn't always a horror story :)

just relax, be happy, try to sleep as much as you can, cause once the twins born, you are too busy to have a rest and sleep.

After reading all the replies (guess I should have done that first!) I noticed that many posters said their doc's considered 38 weeks full term. My doctor never said this to me & as I said, my cousin went 40 weeks, 3 days. At 35 weeks, 1 day my daughter's water broke & both she & my son had to stay in Special Care (step down from NICU) for 18 days due to an underdeveloped digestive system. She was 4lbs, 9oz, he was 5lbs, 9oz. They are now 6 & still a tad smaller than their kindergarten friends. BTW, I was 34 when I conceived, 35 when I delivered.

I delivered my fraternal twin girls at 39 weeks, by scheduled c-section. I was only having braxton-hicks contractions before that point, or at least i think so. I suppose if i was having any sort of real contraction i would have known! So yes it is absolutely possible to go full term. I am a healthy, active 31 year old and i worked (ICU nurse) up until my 37th week. Good luck!

Congratulations! When they will arrive is up to them! lol
I've know many different situations. My twins were born at 37.5 weeks. I was in preterm labour at 30 weeks and was put on bedrest and then they just scared us and stayed in there anyways! I was due to be induced two days after I went into labour. I"m glad they came out when they wanted and when they were healthy and ready to come out.
Not sure how far along you are, etc but you will certainly be monitored more closely with twins than a singleton pregnancy. REally keep in touch with what your body is telling you and what your OBGYN is telling you as well.
I'm also part of a moms of multiples group and it's great! I highly recommend you see what group of multiples might be near you.

I am a twin & we came a month early... I'm 39 years old. My twins went full term at 38 weeks!!! Their weights were 6 lb & 6.7 lbs!! no issues!!! My doctor had me on bedrest the last trimester and that helped (since I was huge & misrable as it was), but I'm so glad that they made it that far!!!!

My doctor preformed a c-section at 38 weeks. I had to have a c-section because my first delivery was also a c-section. My doctor wouldn't let me go any further then 38 weeks because they did not want me to go into labor. But she told me that I could go into preterm labor anywhere from 28weeks and on. I completely understand you being anxious to have your twins...I too was...I was EXTREMELY uncomfortable! My skin actually hurt and I gave up on trying to sleep. But with these girls being my last I tried to cherish EVERY moment...as difficult as it was at times. Before you know it your babies will be here! Lets just make sure they are as healthy as possible! Congratulations!

Mine were induced at 38 weeks. They would have stayed in there till 40 if I hadn't evicted them! I was hesitant to do the induction, but I'm glad I did because they weighed 7.3 and 8.4. They were also both born vaginally, and baby B was breeched. If you have any specific questions for me, feel free to message me!

Hello! My boys will be 2 in a few weeks and are as healthy as can be. They were born via c-section at 35 1/2 weeks bc my body started into labor. They did have to be on oxygen and monitors for about 2 weeks but never any serious concerns. One weighed 4lb 12 oz and the other was 5lb 4oz which was pretty big I thought. I am so blessed and will never forget the moment I saw them. I hope you can enjoy whats left of your pregnancy and hang in there. You have many adventures ahead, just remember....IT WILL GET EASIER!!!

My girls came at 33 weeks. I started going into premature labor at 24 weeks. I was put on bedrest and meds to stop them from coming. Then it started again at 32 weeks when they put me in the hospital. At 33 weeks there was no stopping them, they were ready to come out. But everyone is different. Some people make it to 40 weeks, but most doctors induce by 38 weeks. Good luck!!!

My twins are fraternal, g/g twins. They were born at 37 weeks and 3 days. I did go into preterm labor.at 32 weeks. They we able to stop it. My doctor was sent me to the hospital, to be induced. But my labor, was starting, on its own. (I had a scheduled induction a week later, but my doctor sent me over 6 days early... Because Ella (Baby B) had slowed growing, since my previous visits.. I had them the next day, after pitocin, to keep labor progressing. Baby A, Addison, was 5 pounds 7 ounces, Baby B, Ella was 4 pounds 9 ounces... Previous they had been only 1 or 2 ounces apart. They both did great, they found two knots in Ella's cord, which explains the slower growth. Addison came home after two days, and Ella had to stay for two extra days, becuase she had a hard time maintinaing sugar in her blood.. So she needed fluids for a few days. I was very lucky, I had a relatively healthy pregnancy, and felt great... the last few weeks were more uncomfortable, but you forget it quickly after you see the end result. Congrats and good luck...

Hi
I delivered my twins naturally at 34 weeks 5 days, they were going to induce me at 36 weeks because I had cholestasis which is a liver condition more common with twins basically my liver couldnt handle the hormones and the only way to get rid of it is to no longer be pregnant and if left too long it can cause still birth. I was given steroid shots in advance to help with the lungs. My twin girls spent 23 days in the NICU and are healthy little girls! Good luck, they will come when they are ready and it may be early, just prepare yourself for time spent in the NICU its hard but you will get through it!
