Unfortunately there is nothing medically proven that you can do to try and have twins. Twins can occur naturally by the egg randomly splitting or your body producing two eggs, but there is nothing that you can do to naturally inhance this chance. IVF treatment does have a higher twin rate as in some cases two eggs are out back into the mother and therefore both eggs could implant.

Also, being in the medical profession there are huge risks with having some kinds of twins especially if they are identical or share the same placenta/sac, I do not say this to scare anyone but just to show that although the idea of twins can be quite fairytale in reality it can possibly be quite a traumatic and scary experience for some mothers as well as their partners and families. Lots of mothers have perfect amazing twin pregnancies and births but I have to say that as an outsider and seeing two perfect babies, the notion of twins can be quite charming and seem wonderful.

If you do find yourself pregnant again do not put too much pressure on yourself praying to have twins as many mothers feel a sense of failure, this is similar to trying for a particular sex of baby. :) hope this helps and isn't too scary....its just realistic.

Never ever dreamed of twins and don't really understand when I meet someone and they see twins and say "I always wanted twins" Really? I love my duo but just let life happen if you get twins then great but be happy you are fertile and able to have children.

I heard about the yams as well. I think everyone thinks about having twins at some point and there is a certain draw because it is for some strange reason just interesting. i know when I was a little girl I used to steal my little sisters baby doll so I could put it with my own and pretend they were twins. Then my mom got me a set of twin baby dolls and I always said I would have twins even if I had to adopt them. I was blessed that I conceived them naturally for my first pregnancy. My second pregnancy was a single.

I think it is fine to want them so much so there is no problem with you wanting to increase your chances but not medically. Every mom of multiples will tell you it is not glam and positive attention. The pregnancy was challenging even though it went smooth and no complications, the extra weight and stress on my body was so much more than my single pregnancy. (scars and skin that will cost LOTS of money to fix. I NEVER had a problem with body image or insecurities before the twins and now I really struggle with that. I even lost all my weight back down to 130 but it doesn't matter when you have the obvious effects of a twin pregnancy) The time in the NICU was barely short of living in hell for a time and the risks that a multiples pregnancy bares on the innocent little babies. They struggled and went through a LOT their frst few weeks just to try and survive!. Bringing them home was a blessing but those first months were the hardest I've spent in my life! I didn't even have other children at home to worry about and it was still very difficult! No sleep, constantly having to be right on top of the baby game times 2 without any sleep. Never feeling like you are giving enough for them and then on top of that adding a husband who still needs you as wel as trying to find time to just sit and rest your back a moment. 6 months to a year was not bad but then they start walking and EVERYTHING is a danger to them and you got 2 of them running after everything that will drown, electrocute or burn them and...by the way...you STILL haven't slept! Then the potty training days come and you realize that all those hard times, well, you've really had it "easy" up until now!

Not that they aren't absolutely worth it, but in the end, my single daughter was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO easy after having the twins and I love her every bit as much as I love them! so in the end, twins are really just 2 children, no less, no more than the 2 you already have.

On a different note, I also heard that having sex standing up also causes twins and...well...not to be graphic here but that is how I conceived mine. (not intentionally though haha!) anyways, good luck on having the twins you want but just consider all sdes of it first, not just the "coolness of two at a time" because that may be an intriguing concept, but children are not just a concept, they are full and complete lives that each require 100% of your attention. Don't expect it to be just this fun and sweet and awesome experience. (that is not to discourage. every twin momma I'm sure wouldn't trade their duo for anything, but it is just to paint a more accurate picture)

My cousin is having twins without IVF and twins do not run in the family. She took folic acid, prenatals and her birth control pills all at once for about 5 weeks then stopped the pill and WHAM...twins :) I'm trying that technique now...one more week to go. Also eat lots of dairy and yams if you can...the yams taste weird but help increase your chances

Many of the others have mentioned IVF, which is how I had mine. I will tell anyone this.. IVF isn't fun, and should never be used just to have twins.
I wouldn't trade my two for anything in the world, I would trade the difficult pregnancy, and long NICU stay the babies had. Be happy with what you have

Be happy that the good lord blessed you with 2 babies! If the Lord will only give you what he thinks you can handle! I had my first child at 20 then we were trying for another about 2 years later but it seemed that I would not have another then our 2nd son came along and there is 5 years between them then about 13 months after my 2nd son I found out I was having another. We thought that we were only having 1 but low and behold we were having twins! It is something that cannot be controlled! So be thankful for what you do have and maybe some day your prayers will be answered!

I was reading that women who eat the skin of yams have an increased chance of having twins because there is a natural chemical in the skin of the yams that makes a woman's ovaries mature more than one egg at a time. Pretty cool, huh? Probably increases your chances by a fraction of a percent but you never know....

clomid has a 1 in 12 chance of twins, its how i got mine, but i would never take fertility drugs unless you had a problem concieving. not only do you not need them, but you take them away from someone who does

I guess I'll give the answer.

From what I know, everything is hit or miss...however, older women have a higher chance of multiples, women who've had 3 or more pgs, women of certain descent (I think it's a tribe in Africa)...ummmm....of course, family hx.....

I think there are others, but those are the big ones. As you can probably see, it's not something you can control, not even with IVF. There is no pill etc. However, I understand your desire... I was always drawn to twins, dreamt about twins, thought it would be amazing to have twins. I NEVER thought it would be me (twice! But, lost the first set).

Sometimes things are just meant to happen, and you just have to let go and see what happens next. Somethings you are meant to control.

not for nothing but even if you did ivf you cant guarantee twins! Or on the flip side you could have MORE than 2!

There is no need to chastise Juliane for asking about increasing her chance to have twins. We were all blessed with twins, but is there anything really wrong with wanting to know if there is something she could do to have twins? I don't see anything wrong with having IVF to have twins. What's wrong with that? If she has the money and really wants to have twins why shouldn't she be able to? That's about as bad as saying someone that can't conceive naturally shouldn't have IVF because it's just unethical.

Who are we to judge someone? No one thinks it's wrong to get IVF if someone can't get pregnant naturally.

Juliane I hope you get your twins!!

You are so lucky to have 2 children already. I became a mother of twins. I think it's best to be greatful for what you have. I don't think IVF is the answer. It's just my opinion and I don't mean to sound offensive.

Quoting Teresa:

I wouldn't think any legitimate doctor would, but I hate this question/comments like this and I thought IVF was a much nicer answer then the first one I was thinking.....

I certainly didn't use IVF. I planned to have ONE baby and got surprised w/ two. I would never regret my girls, but I'd never plan it either.

This question drives me nuts too. There was an Austrailian girl on here a few months ago asking how she can have twins. What can she take or do to increase her chances, etc. etc. I think some of the women who ask these questions just want the attention multiples brings, but have no idea how much more work it is especially if you already have one or two or more kids.

I had my singelton unassisted and then had to do IVF to have any more kids because hubby had cancer and it was the ONLY option. He is now unable to ever have more kids.

Fertility Tx is NOT fun. It is physically and emotionally difficult and draining. If you are perfectly healthy and do not need assistance, be thankful for the children you have.

Maybe adoption would be more ethical...

Nope, he sure wouldn't. That's why I suggested talking to her doctor. He'll tell her no way is my guess. I did use fertility treatments, but it was after 3 and 1/2 years of trying everything else. I hate this question as well. I think people should be thankful for the kids they have instead of trying to get twins. Mine were a surprise, I was on a low dose of fertility treatment to try to prevent multiples! LOL Like Teresa mine weren't planned, but are certainly not regretted either.

Would a Dr. in good conscious use IVF/fertility drugs on a perfectly fertile woman?

Unless you and your doctor are willing to do fertility drugs and/or IVF I have never heard of anything to increase your chances of having twins.
