I am 12wks pregnant and just found out yesterday that I am having twins (identical to be exact). I want to see if there is anyone out there that can give me some info on twin pregnancies and what if anything I should be doing different. Does carrying twins make all pregnancies high-risk or just mine since there both in one sack? Also any advice on how to manage twins once they've arrived when you already have a child (6yr old).

Hi Shulena,

My favorite book on everything about twin pregnancies was "When You're Expecting Twins, Triplets, or Quads, Revised Edition: Proven Guidelines for a Healthy Multiple Pregnancy". My memory is that the least risky twin pregnancy is twins in separate sacks with separate placentas and the most risky is one with the twins sharing their sacks and one placenta. All twins pregnancies are higher risk, however. My son was 4 when our twins arrived and I arranged for him to spend his days with another mom and her 4 yr old since I knew I wouldn't be able to give him the time and attention that he would need once the twins came home. He began spending his days with this mom after I was 6 months pregnant since it becomes hard to move beyond the 2nd trimester. Don't mean to scare you, but I recommend preparing for being bedridden or at least somewhat useless for the last months. If your 6 yr old is in school and the twins won't be arriving during summer vacation, I think you'll be fine! Good Luck!! Start eating lots of ice cream to make those babies big!
