Nipple pain on only one side

My 7 week premature twins who are 6 weeks corrected have therefore been nursing for 12 weeks with relatively no pain until the last week. It is exquisitely painful when they nurse on the right side only. It doesn't matter which twin. I try different positions and try both babies but it is only getting worse. The left side is fine. I'm not sure what has caused the change but it only seems to be getting worse. I'm having a hard time sleeping in the precious hours between feeds at night because I am so sore. Has this happened to anyone else? I was thinking of only pumping on the affected breast for a few days. I would appreciate any suggestions.

Thank you for the advice Rebecca. It could be candidiasis. My babies have no evidence of thrush but apparently they can be asymtomatic. I'm going to try a course of fluconozole and some topical antifungal and if I start to see an improvement I'll speak to my pediatrician as to whether I treat the babies.

Any chance you have a yeast infection? That will cause stabbing pain, both when nursing and without. Your nipple would be red and maybe have a little bit of white on it. If you rub off the white, the skin beneath will bleed. My other thought is that you have a slightly tied nipple on that side, which would cause pain when nursing (but shouldn't hurt after).
