The other day I was at the store with my fraternal twins (boy, girl) and this lady tells me that they are not real twins, only identical twins are real twins. That my are just siblings. I can kinda see what she is saying, but it kinda bothered my a little. They were conceived on the same day, carried together for 39 weeks, and born a minute apart on the same day.
I was just curious what any of you thought about it.

i am an identical twin and i have fraternal twins myself. my twins look nothing alike and my son is much larger than my daughter. i believe that if they were conceived, carried together and you gave birth to them on the same day they are twins.

Im a mother of identical twins...and its true people are not educated about twins, but why should they be, I wouldnt have been if I hadnt had twins myself. Although I understand where you are coming from, and I would refer to fraternal siblings as twins myself...but there is also a difference. Identical twins are almost 99% genetically identical and people are fascinated with 2 individuals looking identical, so from that perspective they are true twins and I think thats what people might be referring to when they ask you. I wouldnt take it personally, as a mother of twins Ive had all sorts of incentive comments made. I would use it as an opportunity to educate people about the different types of twins. I always tell people, my twins came from 1 egg splitting so they understand the difference.

What is this fascination people have with- ---Are they real twins? Are they natural twins? Yes they are living breathing people carried in the same womb at the same time= twins

I have 5 month b/g twins and I get asked all the time if they are identical, sometimes ( if I'm out and have been asked 10 time...I simple say...no one's circumcised.) That usually shuts them up, or they start to get it. People just don't know and my mom keeps reminding me that people, unless they have multiples, just don't remember 7th grade science lessons. I had to explain it to my aunt when I was pregnant.

that lady was truly crazy..but there are many of them out there, just shrug it off as someone uneducated and somewhat rude. I once had a lady insist that mine were identical because they look alike...I tried to explain 5 times before I said, oh you must be right and went on my way.

I am so glad that I'm not the only mum of b/g twins that continually gets asked are they identical, I thought that I just kept coming across dumb people LOL. I can't believe though that people can say they aren't real twins because they're not identical!!! it's almost as insulting as the stupid ruling that centrelink has on multiple payments only being for triplets plus!!

well actually there are cases of girl/ boy twins being identical..
they both start off as boys but one of the boys loses a chromosone and turns to b a female on the outside.. (its parts change to female..) but actually its neither sex. the 'girl' is infertile and only grows to about 3foot tall.. really its just bad genes... there is only about 6cases of it in the world in the last 50years.. so its not common..
someone told me about it cose i was saying how i hate ppl asking if they r identical.. i also have girl/boy twins..

It amazes me how uneducated most people are on the topic of multiples! My brother even thought that a boy and girl twin can be identical. Yeah, they might look exactly alike, but there's one big part that is very different! Reasons like this are why I love my twins group! There are some things in life no one like a twin mommy will understand!

I've had that too. Someone told me they couldn't be twins because they weren't identical and didn't look anything alike. Another person told me that twins can't be boy/girl. And mine are a boy and a girl and I get asked almost every time I take them out if they are identical. They are 6 months old tomorrow, so it's getting old! They are definitely twins. Just ask the busybodys how old their twins are, since they seem to be such an expert! And my personal favourite for are they identical is just to say yes, and wait for the penny to drop. It's quite funny when people realise what a stupid thing they have said.

I have B/B fraternal twins but I have heard many moms in my twins club say someone asked them if their B/G twins were Identical.  Their response was usually....Ummmmm- no they are not identical, one has a penis and the other doesn't.  Little common sense people!  The crazy things people ask.

Most people don't think my boys are twins. Luke has a good 4 lbs and 3" on Tyler. If he keeps growing so quickly it will look like they were "irish twins" pretty soon rather than 36 weekers born together.  LOL!

They are twins regardless of what that lady thinks. Just because they aren't identical doesn't make them any less a twin.

People will say the darnest things! Dont' be bothered by it and just smile and brush it off. I have fratenal twin boys (4mths) and a 2yr old boy...whenever I'm out with the boys...I get asked so many things and people always make comments. I do get asked lots if they are identical or not. I will sometimes explain identical vs fraternal twins to people but other times I will just go on and not bother. Babies and kids always attrack attention and I think multiples even more are just drawn to them.

She's truly an idiot. But what does she say about twins born on different days then? Because that does happen. They are still twins all the same if they were carried at the same time. That would bother me too but try not to let it. This is a woman clearly jealous of your blessings.

Some people just dont think before they speak!! If I get asked one more time if they are twins I am going to say no and just leave it at that!!!! Then see what they say to that!! HAHA!!

I think that is the coolest part of fraternal twins...so incredibly different and their own people who shared the same space for all that time making them so incredibly connected! Maybe a response like that would help you react to such dopy people.

They are TWINS! They are REAL TWINS! That lady just does not know what she is talking about! People say the craziest things out in public and they ask the oddest questions. Having twins is so special.

I have been told that too, I have a boy/girl set of twins and they look nothing alike. People don't believe me when I say they are twins... don't let uneducated people try to take that from you!

That is crazy! Twins are twins-born either of two offspring produced at a birth -from Webters dictionary!

I can see where that would bother you! Mine are fraternal too. It is true that genetically they are siblings that were born on the same day. However, they are definitely twins since they were conceived at the same time and you carried them together! Don't ever let anyone take that away from you! They are very special and you are a special mom for carrying them!
