How many of you decided to get separate cribs for your twins? If so, when did you make the transformation?

My twins are 3 1/2 months old and are starting to wake each other up so we plan to get a separate crib this weekend; should I just make them quit co-sleeping cold turkey or start with naps to slowly get them used to the idea. Any tips or advice are appreciated!

We bought 2 cribs when we found out and initially only set up one...that lasted 3 nights. They kept eachother awake sleeping in the same crib, I guess all that time sharing EVERYTHING they wanted to be alone, haha.

My twin boys slept together until about 7 months when one of them was a real bed hog and kept the other twin up. They are almost 10 and still share a room as per their request.

Mine only slept in the same bassinet for a couple nights...they've always slept better in separate beds...weird, cuz they cant stand to be apart while awake. lol But all kids are different...and any transition takes time, so you gotta have patience and make the transition gradual

I had my twin boys in the same crib until they were big enough to move around, like rolling over or starting to crawl because by then I feel they were big enough to be on their own.

I kept them in the same crib until 5 months old (when they started rolling around during the night), then we switched to separate. They were good sleepers before and after and had no problem transitioning.

I've posted about my favorite sleeping book on my blog, check it out:

my twins slept in the same crib until about 2 months old, but they were wild sleepers and would end up waking each other up! within 2 weeks after seperating them, they were both sleeping through the night

I had my twins in the same crib up until they were about a year old. Mine were in the NICU when they were born and they came home different times. But it was hard on them if they weren't side by side in the NICU. Once they both were home I had them in the crib up until they were all most a year old, not quit a year old.

my boys slept in the same crib until they started waking each other up at night. They were about 6 months when they each had their own. I still kept them in the same room and I put the beds in the corner of the room agaist the wall to make an L shape. To me it was important that they could still see and touch each other if they wanted to. They are almost 2 now and the beds are still set up the same way.

You did the right thing by putting them is separate cribs. We did that with our boys around 4 months old. They kept kicking eachother and waking eachother up!!

My identical twins still sleep together and always have. They can't sleep without the other one. When we were in the hospital the nurses tried to separate them but our Dr told the nurses they should be together because that is what they were used too. We brought them home and they slept in separate pac n plays for a week or two then they were back together and have been ever since. They will be three in February and sleep in a twin sized bed. We have another bed for them but they prefer to sleep with each other.

We had our twin boys in the same crib until they couldn't lay sideways in the crib. (around 3 1/2 mo) We have the 2 cribs side by side and the first night they slept 13 hrs!!! I think they like their own space and still be able to have the other one near.

We had seperate cribs from the begining, they shared for the first 2 weeks they were home from the hospital. Then we seperated them.

Way back in the olden days :o)

Our sons were almost full term when they were born & because of mine and their medical situations, we stayed in the hospital for 6 days. When we brought them home and laid them in the porta-crib, they moved until they were snuggled side by side. The boys slept together until they were 5 months old. As they grew up, they'd still sleep together occasionally. We wanted them to be individuals but also dear brothers. The summer before they went off to college, they were still wearing each other's clothes. As grown men, they talk by phone several times a week & see each other often.

It all depends on what's right for your babies & for your family.

When my husband was little, he and his two older brothers slept in a double bed. When my parents would take us to the cabin, they'd put four of us in a double bed. What was normal back then seems very odd now.

My twins slept in the same crib until they were about 9 months old when we finally got a 2nd crib. By then it was getting pretty crowded in there. Lily had started sleeping through the night at about 4 months, but Patrick was feeding every 2 hours and would frequently end up in my bed. Lily was quite used to sleeping alone at least part of the night so she transitioned easily. Patrick had a much rougher time as he had always slept with either Lily in the crib or in our bed. It took a month or so before he finally settled down.

They are now just over 2 years old. Lily moved into a twin/single bed earlier in the summer but Patrick seemed quite content to stay in his crib. We had to move one of them as we were losing a crib. Although Patrick was comfortable sleeping in his crib, he started to get frustrated that Lily could get out of bed whenever she wanted. Now they are both back to sleeping together in the same bed (with bed rails). It took about a month for them to settle back into their routine. I have had to occasionally separate them, when one is keeping the other one from sleeping. We will eventually move them into 2 single/twin beds but their room is really too small and they are too young for bunk beds.

I have 15 month old identical girls. I left them in the same crib until they were 13months. Now that they are seperated, I have their cribs end to end and they sit and hold hands through the rails!!! It is really cute, but I know they had to be seperated, they would lay all over each other.

We always had them separated. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends against shared cribs to reduce the risk of SIDS. I know a lot of parents decide to let their twins share cribs and have absolutely no trouble, but the when my twins were in the NICU, we talked to the doctors and nurses about it and decided that we would keep them separated.

Once the twins got too long to sleep side to side which was 4 months we decided it was time to seperate them.I thought it was going to be a rough time but they did great and they still are. (my twins are 7 months now)

We had separate cribs for them before they were born. The hospital put them in separate cribs after they were born and once we brought them home they went in their own cribs. I think the most difficult thing about having them in the same crib would be separating them once they got too big to be in the same crib.

Helly Sonya,

We put our boys in separate cribs in their nursery when they were about 2 months old. They weren't sleeping well when they were both in the same crib.

We put our twins in seperate cribs the first night we came home. I'd read a few horror stories about how hard it was to seperate them once they got used to sleeping together. They are now 7 months old and can nap and sleep in the same room without disturbing eachother (most of the time!) I recommend seperate only because you'll have to do it eventually.

My twins were in the same crib until 6 months (they started rolling on each other) then I kept them in the same room but put them in separate cribs. At 8 months they went to their own rooms. Liam my son stopped sleeping unless he was being held once they were put in separate cribs. He is 6 years old now and sleeps good but it took a long time and lots of crying (both he and I)

we had b/g so of course had to decorate separate rooms for them so naturally i had 2 separae cribs but didn't sleep them separately until about 4 1/2 months when they started rolling and kicking each other. they went separate just fine. no troubles. of course, during the day, they would sleep separate sometimes so they had gotten kind of used to either way but now they are 9 months and CAN NOT sleep together at all.

I didn't separate until they broke the crib? That was after they turned 1 year, 2 boys just kept jumping all over the crib. A close friend gave me 1 daybed and that was for them to sleep in. But they were in my bed. Now that they are 4years old they have there own beds and doing just fine! Some night's they climb in my bed, but most of the time they are good boys stay in there beds.

We put our boys, now 6 months, in separate crbs at night but during the day they shared a pack n play for day time naps. One of our boys is very moble now so I would be afraid he would hurt himself or his brother.

Ours were born @ 31wks+ 5 days gestation.. boy/girl,... they were in seperate incubatiors for 2 weeks... I wanted them intogether but the nurses were having none of it.. after we got home.. they were in own moses baskets during the day but in "continental cot" ( oversized cot) overnight together.. this was fine until about 10 months.. used to go through and eldest (boy by 6 mins) would have stripped other one and taken nappy off, (coughs) room reeking of p**p, gutts of nappy everywhere and had scaled the cot side and tryin to pull his sister through the bars...lol, got seperate cots and god knows how he managed but he always got out.. used to find him lying under her cot, her lyin across the cot with legs thru the rails.. so were in little tykes car and cottage beds (junior bed) from 1 year old, both walking by this time to..he always got inbeside his sister... but now they fight like cat and dog..11 years on

My girls coslept until 10 months until every night one started falling asleep on top of the other twin! It got scary so that was our clue to separate and they still sleep with their little hands touching each other through the crib slats....love it!

We kept our boys together in the same crib until they were just about 6 months old. We finally had to separate them because they woke eachother up at night. We now have their cribs close to eachother so they are able to chatter back and forth and see eachother when they are lonely for eachother, and it works out great.

I did separate cribs from the start, I myself am a twin and was always treated as one person. Therefore when I found out that I was having twin boys (now four months old), I wanted to make sure that from the beginning they were treated as two people. I'm not saying that people who use one crib for twins are wrong, but this was just my choice and they have been sleeping all through the night since they were two weeks old! Goodluck on what ever choice you make.

Hello Sonya-
We have twin girls and had to seperate them almost from the start...one of our girls was able to roll over at a few days old. It was the safest option for us. However, we placed their cribs facing each other and did lots of time in the pack and play together and supervised :) They are 2 now and are the best of friends. They still share a room and numerous nights I will check on them before we head to bed and they will be in bed together :) Sooner or later they need to be seperated for saftey..and this is what worked for us.

I got 2 cribs as a gift... but for the 1st couple of months I laid them in the same crib. They are 5 years old now and I have tried to put them in separate rooms and they love it during the day... but at night they ended up in the same bed... so I moved them back into the same room and now they sleep in their own beds but same room!!!!

I have 2 yr old identical twins that still sleep together! We have tried seperating them and they refuse to be seperated! One of them always climbs in the bed with the other one! They do not which bed they sleep in as long as they are together! It is really cute now that they can talk, They used to just scream and cry when we tried to seperate them but now they let us know that they will not be seperated! The last time that we tries to seperate them the oldest (3 minutes older LOL) said " bubby can't sweep (sleep) without me he will dry (cry) ! It was so precious and that is when I finally decided that they will br the ines to seperate when they are ready! So my opinion is that twins share a small space the whole time you are pregnant and that is what they are accustomed too and SHOULD NOT be forced to change until THEY ARE READY!! Just let ur babies decide even if they are little when their decision is made they will find a way to communicate their desires to u!!!

My twins shared a crib until it was time to put them in toddler beds. I had talked to moms of other twins that told me that a second crib would end up being for storage. When they were born the nurses put them in seperate bassinets and they screamed. The nurse asked me if she could put them together and I said sure. As soon as she put Grace in with Brooke they both stopped crying and went right to sleep. I knew then that I would not seperate them until I had to. They are 7 now and sleep in twin beds in the same room.

Hi Sonya, we got them seperate beds before they turned 6 months. They are both bed hogs lol and I did not think they would be comfortable trying to sleep if they kept hitting each other. They have done really well. I kept the cribs close together though so they know they are still by each other.
