Sonogram Results say....

I felt pregnant in early July and havn't had my period since the 19th of june. I took a test and it was positive at the end of july, I started spotting and still am a week ago. The doctor called me in to do a sonogram and found 2 sacs. One was bigger than the other and the biggest was measured at 5 weeks and some odd days....neither one had heartbeats at this time...I go back for another sono in 5 days....
My questions are:

Do women with twins spot more all through the pregnancy?
Has anyone gone through this type of sonogram results?
Can it be likely that one egg is not fertilized or just small?
Is there anything else I should know?

I was spotting at 6 weeks and that was when I found out I was having twins. I havent had anymore since then. Both of the twins are growing at the same rate so I am not sure about size wise, and they couldnt detect heart beat at that time either. Just keep your chin up and try not to stress. I hope everything goes well at the next sono, keep us updated!

Most women do not have spotting during their pregnancy but it is also normal for some women to have some spotting during their pregnancy... with one baby or twins. Just as long as you are not bleeding heavily, having clots in your blood, and/or cramping with the bleeding. I had spotting for both my pregnancies (first one was a singleton, then with my twins as well). Twins are more likely to give you problems. you may want to limit some of your physical activity if you have some spotting. You can ask your doctor for advice on physical activity.

It is also normal not to get heart rates until about the 8th or 9th week of gestation. Too small. That is why most women do not have their first sonogram until about the 8th or 9th week of pregnancy. I didn't have my first sonogram with any of my pregnancies until I was at least 8 weeks. Both times, we heard heart beats. You may still not get a heart beat when you go back in five days if you were only measured at 5 weeks. I would not worry too much about that. You may still be too early in your pregnancy to get a heart beat. I would be worried if they did not hear/find a heart beat after the 10th week of pregnancy. The doctor should advise you on what to do if that should happen.

If you have fraternal twins (two eggs, two sperm, two separate placentas and two separate sacs) there are instances where one develops normally while the other halts progression of the division cycle. (Since they are not of the same egg and same sperm that happened to split during the division cycle). In an essence, fraternal twins are two separate beings that just happens to be born at the same time. There are also instances where fraternal twins have been fertilized at different times/days. Remember, there are two separate eggs and two separate sperms.

Overall, I wouldn't get too worried right now. It is still too early. Relax and don't get yourself worked up even though I know it's easier to say than to do. I wish you and your family the best of luck and a wonderful pregnancy.

Some women just spot more than other for many different reasons. Twin pregnancy is a higher risk pregnancy obviously. If they saw two eggs that means that they are both fertilized because they are adhered to your endometrial lining of the uterus. This doesn't mean that both are viable. One could possibly not continued to grow. Unfort you have to wait for the next sonogram for more info. There is a possiblity that one egg was released before the other, you may have thrown one egg 3+ days after you threw the first. Thus, one would seem farther along. Good luck!

Women having twins can spot more during pregnancy....though it is usually not a consistant spotting. Keep track of this (make notes!) and speak with your doctor. Not finding a heartbeat at this stage is not abnormal...it is quite early in your pregnancy. Try not to worry. I had identical twin boys. There is some conflicting information in an earlier post. Identical twins CAN have two sacs - mine did. It depends on when the egg split. My boys measured two weeks apart in growth throughout my entire pregnancy and are still a bit different in size even now at 7 months. My sister also has identical twins that were in two seperate sacs. There is some great information out there for you about types of twins at www.twinpregnancyandbeyond.com and www.babycenter.com. Your pregnancy symptoms will most likely be heightened throughout your pregnancy, with a possibility of having issues will lower abdominal and lower back pain as your pregnancy progresses due to the weight of the twins and stretching of tendons. I wore a pregnancy support belt from the time I was three months along until I was put on bed rest at 30 weeks due to pre-term labor, and it really helped me a lot, as it helped to support the weight of "the belly" when I was up and walking around. (I was HUGE!) I suggest making a list of questions for your doctor...and make sure that you ask them! It's really important that you do, and much more important that you have a doctor that realizes that a multiple pregnancy is not just like a single pregnancy, and should not treat it as such.

Good luck to you!

I found out a I was having twins at my first us at 9 weeks, both girls measured the same, but in separate sacs and they found both heartbeats, but I've heard of women who did not hear the heartbeat(s) until up to 13 weeks. I also had spotting early on, freaked me out, but also my research told me this was normal with twins, it ended by the 2nd trimester for me. I was VERY sick the whole pregnancy, my doctor put me on Zofran and it worked wonders for me. I remained nauseated the entire pregnancy, but stopped puking every day around week 14. I ended up with a c-section at 36 week and 3 days because one twin was not growing as well as the other even though they each had their own placenta. My girls are 9 weeks old today and they are a joy. Wish you the best. And don't stress, you cannot change what will be, just pray for the strength to deal with whatever comes your way.

Yes women who have twins spot more, not necessarily throughout pregnancy. I had a singleton pregnancy with no spotting and two twin pregnancies, first one I had mostly brown spotting for 4-5 days at about 7wks. Second one I had bright red spotting gradually turning brown over 10 days starting at 11wks. Both pregnancies I carried to term and had nice big babies. However, miscarriage rates are also much higher with multiple pregnancies. I didn't have ultrasounds that early so I don't know what happened that early on. You can have empty sacs and it is also possible that they were fertilized at different times too and/or just growing at different rates, every baby is different after all especially if they end up being fraternal. Fertilization within a week or so of each other is not that uncommon, much more rarely you have what is called super-fetation, where you get pregnant when already pregnant up to 3 months later. That's pretty rare though. Listen to your heart, talk to your babies and trust your instincts.
All the best.

I only had a tiny bit of spotting when I was expecting my period. I didn't find out I was pregnant with twins until I was 16 weeks (measuring at 20). I was pregnant before my girls and had a miscarriage. We went in at 5 weeks because of bleeding and didn't see a heartbeat, but they told me that it was normal because I wasn't very far along yet. They usually don't even try to get a heartbeat until around 8 weeks, because the chances are not very good. If I were you I would just hang in there. I know it's hard, but I am sure everything will turn out to be just fine. If you are feeling very sick that is a good sign...that your hormones are rising like they should be. Keep us posted!

i had twins and i spotted quite reg, also it is common that alot of woman can have empty sacs. with my girls at my 16week sonogram the found a third sack but it was empty. and the consultant explained to me that i may have released three eggs and only two where fertilized and the other didnt. also the spotting could be your body trying to get rid of the unfertilized egg. You will find out more at teh next scan, good luck with everything and i hope i helped

I found out i was pregnant very early, so when i called my Dr to set up my first visit, she said she doesn't accept women till they are 10-12 weeks! I was shocked because i remember friends with ultrasounds of their baby at 8weeks! When we went in i told her that i thought i was growing fast, and that i was sure that i wasn't any earlier than i thought... i know when i got pregnant! lol
I went in with my mother-n-law and we had joked about me having twins... but where still VERY shocked when she asked "ok there's... oh, well what do you see?" i asked "what is on top of it?" thinking it was some kind of body part. I HAD NEVER SEEN ONE IN ACTION, I DIDN'T KNOW! lol she moved it so they were centered on the screen and we both screamed and cried. lol The pregnancy went very well, only threw up once, and never spotted. Only in the end was there some complications, and still my baby boys were born HAPPY AND HEALTHY!

Maybe because you are so early they cannot be detected!? I pray that everything works out for you and your family!!

The best advice i was ever given was "do not stress out" . It is true! Even in the end when there were some life threatening issues... i stayed calm and everything turned out fine! Just believe that you are in good hands, whether it be God's hands or the Dr's who are looking out for you and your baby/ies! :D

When I went in at five weeks and there was only one egg visible. At eight weeks we found out it was twins and got two heartbeats. I spotted at 12 weeks for four days very lightly. My son was at least a week bigger than my daughter the whole time.

When I had my first u/s we saw 2 sacs but only one heartbeat. The doctor said that was normal. Sometimes it's hard to see the heartbeats early on. We went back a week later and saw and heard both heartbeats. I was 7 weeks pregnant. I've known women who didn't get a heartbeat until the 8th or 9th week so just try to stay positive. Hopefully everything is fine, but it's no good for you to get stressed out about it. It's very possible that your eggs were fertilized on totally different days. I know a woman who's twins were actually concieved 1 month apart (at least that's what the doc thought). If there's 2 sacs then they would be fraternal. Just remember that they are VERY small right now and it's VERY hard to see anything, let alone a heartbeat so don't worry and try to relax! Even if you don't see them in 5 days it's still very possible there are 2 babies there. Just wait a while and see. Good luck! I hope you get the positive results you're looking for!
