Twins after mirena IUD?

I had the IUD ( and hated it) I had it removed June 2011 and six months later I became pregnant with twins. There's no family history of twins in my family. Now we are waiting for the arrival of our b/g twins.

I have not heard that happening...but I, too, have the Mirena after delivering my twins because of my age and I don't think I will be removing it so I don't have to worry about that happening to me..

Nacarid- It is generally accepted that identicals are a fluke and not necesarilly hereditary however I have found a few studies that suggest the male could have an increase of an enzyme that is shown to increase the chances of egg splitting(identicals). Not that you would have another Identical set but seeing there are a few sets of identicals in his side you never know.... I will try and find those research articles.

Most of what I have read points to release of two eggs after removal not egg splitting. Unsure if it would increase chance of identicals, wish I could get my hands on a medical study about this if there is one. It may just be pure speculation the increase of twinning after removal after all you remove it to get pregnant and it just so happens to be twins. There are studies that suggest that getting pregnant the first month after the birth control pill increases your chances of fraternals by a very minute percentage. The IUD works with a very low hormone level directly in the uterus and can, but does not always supress ovulation. Mostly what I have read of theory behind twins and IUD is that if it does supress ovulation then after removal your body gets excited about the uterus and ovaries returning to normal thus releasing multiple eggs. Anyone discuss the IUD and twin with their Doctor?

I had always credited my IUD to the conception of my twins. I also did not know of anybody else that this had happened to. I took out my IUD in November and found out in Feburary that I was having twins. Like many others there is no history of twins in my family, but on my husbands side we have the 4th set of identical twins. After doing some reading I found that twins usually come from the mothers lineage and not the fathers. I have 20 month identical twin girls and when I first found out I cried, because I was terrified. My husband wants to try again and because I feel like the reason we had twins was the IUD, I am terrified that we will have another set. The likely hood of this happening is slim, but you never know.

I had my mirena taken out febuary 2010 and got pregnant in july, and in March gave birth to fraternal twin boys. No family history of twins, was very shocked!

Hi Charity,
I have b/g twins that are two. I never thought about the connection between the IUD Mirena and conceiving twins. I too got pregnant 4 months after getting it removed. I do have 2 other kids 12 and 5 and had the mirena after the 5 year old was born. I do have twins that run in the family on my mothers side but i believe they are in their fifties or sixties. Somewhere on my husbands side there have been at least one set of twins but they too would be much older. It is interesting about the IUD. I just thought that because the twins were my third pregnancy and i am getting older that that played the bigist role in conceiving the twins. I would be most interested in any info you find between twins and mirena.
