How do we keep this group active?

I really liked "Night Circus". I saw the Cirque de Soleil movie over Christmas break and thought of that book. Enjoy!

Hi,

I think one book a month, with discussions that occur on a structured basis. And what I mean by that is members can expect a question / comment or two posed a certain day and time of the week (e.g., the first and third Sunday, 9 pm EST).

What could be really nice is if the original prompt(s) can elicit group members to share how it is relevant to each's life, as when responses have real world implications and inspirations, the group then functions as a vehicle for self-improvement (without really needing to try!) and positive change.

We can all build off of each other!

Sure, there are lots of things I'd like to read. In fact, I just stumbled across a book that looks like something I might not usually pick up, but it looks intriguing. It's called "The Woodcutter" by Kate Danley. Also, something my local club originally planned to do (although we've strayed a little) was to alternate between contemporary fiction and classics. Although with a group like this, that is meant for more people, that might be difficult since a lot of people will have already read a variety of classics. But something to consider.

I just joined, so I don't have any great insight on what has happened with this group in the past, but I would LOVE to help get it more active now! Can we choose a book for January? My offline ladies book club is reading "The Great Gatsby" now, and then "The Night Circus" for February, and I'm already reading the February book because I finished Gatsby in one sitting 2 months ago. So I would really like to have a book to read for this club as soon as I finish my current one. How do you select your books? Does one person select, or do you vote or take suggestions?

I was just looking on-line for a book club and found you. You might find more members like me, looking for a book club in the fall, when the weather is more conducive to staying inside and reading. :) So, things may get more active on there own.

I agree with the above posts--limit it to one book/month. As much as I LOVE to read, I haven't even paid much attention to the group because I am way too busy to sit down and read often. And then, yes, creating a discussion feed maybe centering on one question or character, with a new question every few days over the next month while we're reading and preparing for the next book.



Or...every few days, a question or a few questions could be posted about each chapter/section of the book. So people can contribute to different topics of interest rather than just discussing freely. As much as I know the group was originally intended for people to "free-share," the reality is many people won't know where to begin unless given a thought.

Since I am pretty new to COM...joined just yesterday morning...I haven't gotten much of a feel for the communities yet. I am an avid reader myself and when I saw this one, I just had to join. I will be going over your list and seeing what's there to read though!

Normally we have one book, but during the summer we often offer many as people may not be as busy. Additionally, anyone can post discussions about the books. Laura Beth and I are trying to find ways to encourage others to want to post their own discussions and/or answer discussions that others have started. Thanks! :)

It seems that sometimes there are 2 or 3 books per month; maybe having only 1 would work better. But either way, perhaps have some discussion questions during the month.

would it help if we all read the same book at the same time? or, be sure to post each time you finish a book, and give a recommendation?

i just finished Mudbound. i wouldn't necessarily recommend it. it wasn't that fast moving. i'm now onto "Shanghai Girls" by LIsa See. i'm really enjoying it. but, still mourning the ending of "Cutting for Stone". i tend to put books on pedestals when i really like them, and go into the following books with an attitude of "can you top that" lol
