1 1/2 year old not talking like she should

Janae-Just because she is nearly 2 and not using sentences yet does not mean anything is wrong. Most kids at 2 just begin to use 2 word sentences and even 3 word sentences. Now some kids talk as good as older kids but it depends on what they are exposed to until these ages. You have to understand that though there is a norm for kids milestones at certain ages it does not apply that kids have to make those milestones at the exact ages. Some develop a bit faster and others a bit slower. They are unique each and every one.

The best way to encourage your child to speak in sentences is to talk in sentences to her...be very verbal yourself, and give her opportunities to try...listen and respond. I think you have nothing to worry about with your 1 1/2 year old. My three year old did not mumble 30 audible words in one week...we participated in early childhood intervention provided by the state, and I am pleased to report that he went on to be a leader among his peers and an excellent, above grade level student. Point being: Don't stress or worry!

At her age you shouldn't really be expecting her to speak in any sort of sentence. A couple of words strung together maybe (this is the age they begin to do that) but sentences? No......
Just keep having conversations with her. If she says "juice yum" (or something), repeat back to her in a full sentence "The juice is yummy?" It is all about practice. But really, many children don't speak in sentences until they are a bit older.
