1 Year old won't nap

[deleted account] ( 4 moms have responded )

My very lovely and previously predictable son has always napped from 9-11am and 1-3pm. Since he was 10 months old (and gained mobility!), he won't go down for the afternoon nap. He is dead tired and very cranky- he really still needs the afternoon nap. We've pushed it later and later, and go by his "tired" signals. Afternoon naps become full meltdowns. He throws his pacifier and favourite snuggly animal away. I've tried keeping him up since he doesn't want to nap, but he gets overtired. Any suggestions for making afternoon naps a less traumatic and more enjoyable experience for both of us?

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

That's about when both our boys dropped from two naps to one longer one. Your schedule sounds EXACTLY like ours, lol. I loved it! But now they both do one nap for 3- 31/2 hours, and their wake up time is a little later. It sucks for a few days (maybe three or four) while they moved into a different schedule but it's sooooo much better now. We have wake up at 7, nap at 11:30, bed at 6:30 (sometimes 6:15). Do what works for you guys- in my experience, it's the mommy who doesn't want the second nap to end lol!

:) As my dad always said - "even if you aren't ready to sleep, your body needs to rest" So.... at the designated times, put him in his crib - tell him that his body needs rest - he doesn't have to sleep - but his body needs to lay down. Give him a toy, lay him down, shut the door, and walk out. He may fuss but he will eventually get bored of yelling and sit and play with the toy...and maybe doze off. Play soothing music in the room, maybe add some lavendar scent (good for sleeping) and be STRONG! He may not sleep but then again, he might. Keep the routine going - his body will thank you in the end for helping it to overcome his stubbornness. :) Good luck!

Maybe he is trying to cut down to 1 nap a day. Thats what we ended up doing. Even now my son is nearly 3 and has 1 napa day at about the same time. When he was younger he wet down for his nap at 12noon and slept for a couple of hours if that and now he is going down about 1pm and sleeping till like 3-4pm. That may seem like a lot but hes tired and still sleeps well at night time so yeah.

Maybe try cutting him down to 1 nap a day - hope it works

i've read some other posts about children who can't get any sleep. they are saying their children are very sharp (genius child). these moms also say the kids are not too interested in their toys, more into books. does any of that sound familiar??? they say their little brains just don't shut down, awwww! keep reading some of the conversations posted, i think they might help. good luck mom! and good rest...
