I'm a little frustrated these days. My little guy is 10 1/2 months old and still has never babbled and only says "ahh". Also, He doesn't swallow anything chunky...no rapid melt puffs, stage 3 foods, table foods or anything. Once in a while he will swallow a tiny bit of chunky food, after scooping it back into his mouth 4-5 times (when it's mushy, I'm sure). Meals have become horrible for the both of us, and I'm considering going back to a strictly pureed diet again, for him. Any ideas?

I have talked to his doctor a couple of times, and again today. We are getting a referral for an evaluation just to rule out any potential problems. His doctor isn't horribly concerned about either, but I do wonder about baby being a bit tongue-tied. The two together (lack of babbling and aversion to eating chunky/textured foods) lead me to think there might be more to his particular situation. With an eval, at least we will know which direction to go. He also just might not be ready for anything with chunks/texture yet. That alone is bothersome for me, as he already has 12 teeth, including his top 1-year molars and canines. His hearing seems to be ok, as he responds to my voice and his name. However, there is no real way to know how his hearing is, without being evaluated and/or tested. Thank you all for your thoughts and advise..

It doesn't sound like he is ready for any of those foods. Stick with puree until he is ready. Also, babbling comes at all stages. Just keep talking to him and get him to "coo". Read, sing, narrate what you are doing when he is in the room, show him new things, play with him, positive love and encouragement. Mile stones are not a measurement of how your baby is progressing, it is simply a guide for parents to have a rough idea of when to expect advances.

I agree with Dove. Don't torture yourself and feed him whatever he willingly will consume. It's worth talking to your doctor or having an evaluation done.

What does his doctor say? I would not be at all concerned about the eating if that were the only issue, but combined w/ the lack of babbling I would be inclined to think it would be worth checking out.

If meals have become horrible for both of you... go ahead and keep him on the purees for the time being. No sense adding stress where there doesn't need to be any. Consider asking the doctor for referrals for a hearing test and a speech evaluation (Easter Seals will typically do a full evaluation and it's free). It could just be that he needs some more time, but the professionals would be able to tell you if it's a situation that would benefit from some early intervention.
