Hi all, this may be a really silly issue however I just want to be sure that all is fine. My little 10 month old boy has just discovered his penis. He is constantly playing with it and pulling it really hard. For the mums with boys out there, is this normal at this age? There is no swelling or redness to indicate a urine infection or anything.

thanks all
Amanda

Thank you to all the wonderful mums who have clarified this for me. I am from a family of all sisters and my husband was none the wiser. Thought I would get loads of info from the mums on circle of mums. What are some of the techniques to stop them playing with their bits in public?

I didn't mean it to be a bad thing..not at all!! I hope I didn't offend anyone, if I did I do apologize!! I was typing faster then my brain was computing the words!! I just meant that they don't realize they are doing it and could happen in public. This isn't coming out right...I don't mean anything wrong by it, but most parents don't realize what their child is doing and when they do they become very offended by it or think something is wrong with their child. It is a very natural thing and should be talked about with their parents when they can understand.

Hello to everyone with this issue. My 10 month old grandson grabs and hits his ball sack with enough force that he recently caused a rash to erupt along with dime sized welts on the ball sack itself..
I am so relieved to find that other children (infants), repeat this behavior. I do not know if his mood has anything to do with it, but would appreciate any other mothers, or grandmothers whose children exhibit this behavior.
Again Thank you,
Penny

Boys Touch it always lol So I am Learning lol My son will be 3 in Jan and he is always pulling at it and touching it telling me about his birdie lol That is what we call it till he is older . My friends who also have Boys tell me it is a boy thing and that they go through the same . Natural for them to be Interested in it . I just push My sons hand away easily and get him to focus on something else . I have also told him it is his privacy and it is just for the potty . Let him know more as he gets older .

Hi, I would definitely take him to his pediatrician, he could have a yeast infection. there might not be any redness but it may itch. Its best to have his doctor rule out any problems.

My son is 3 1/2 and he touches it (pulls and hits) when ever he gets a chance, sometimes I think wow doesn't that hurt, but I just tell him he has to do when he is alone. I try to keep his pants on as much as much as I can. I just say he takes ofter his father cause his dad touches his penis more than I think he should too, but he says he does not realize he is doing it half the time and I think the other half he is doing to see if I will says something.......LOL

Yes! My son is so proud of his "Mr. Winky", that he will announce it to the room at large! He will shout, "Winky", and point at it until everybody there agrees that, yes, that is his winky... he's 2 now.

yes its is absolutely normal. The first time it was probably wow something new and then his mind discovered it feels good to touch it so he continues touching. He will do it on and off from now on. For now when he does it ignore it unless your in public and later (around age 3) explain to his that it is a special private part and that if he wants or needs to touch then he need to go into his and close the door.

Quoting Tina:

A lot of mom's don't realize that this he has also discovered the good feeling he gets after "playing" with his penis. As a matter of fact little girls do it also!! They don't realize that it is wrong for them. And yes this will happen for the rest of their lives!! Good luck all of you!!

what do you mean by " they dont realize its wrong for them"? children need not be ashamed for touching their own bodies if they choose so. i will teach my now 2 year old (btw he likes touching his) that if he is to do that he needs to go somewhere private. dont make them feel like they are doing something bad.

i appoligize in advance if you did not mean it that way :)

Amanda,
Your little man has just started his journey of discovery of his own body. It is like finding his fingers and toes. His hands are probably just long enough to land at crotch level. As long as there is no swelling or redness to indicate a health problem don't sweat it. Like other Mom's have said, this journey will continue on forever and all you need to worry about is when he gets a lot older and doesn't do it in public. Congratulations on being a Mom!

It is their natural habbit. They can't help it, it is just sort of there and they reach for it. It is something that goes on through life. Men are no different.
