Katherine had an excellent suggestion with the AA meetings and grief counseling. I'm so sorry for what you are going through right now. I wish I could help in some way. You have to stop the drinking immediately. You are early enough that chances are very good that any previous alcohol consumption won't harm your baby, but any further CAN and will.

Smoking is, of course, not a GOOD thing for your baby... or for you, but like Katherine also mentions... the stress of stopping smoking can be harmful as well. If you are only at 15 cigarettes a day.... just focus on the not drinking right now and the grief with your mother. THEN you can try and cut down the cigarettes a bit. One thing at a time and the drinking is the first that HAS to go.

Hang in there! Maybe taking some long walks can help clear your mind a little. Exercise can also be a stress reliever. I'm sorry about your mom and I wish I had more help/support to offer you.

I have not been is such a situation however I am a Mother and an ex-smoker. It sounds like you have a lot going on right now however masking the pain and stress with drinking and smoking isn't going to make anything better. Since you're pregnant I would suggest that you stop drinking all together now and wean yourself from the cigarettes. The most important thing is the health of your unborn child. Although it sounds like your pregnancy was unplanned you have to be selfless right now and put that child that did not ask to be born, first. Good luck and best wishes to you.

There are healthier ways to cope with the stress in your life. Please stop drinking! Its still early to do something about the smoking as well. Maybe seek some councelling to learn how to cope with the stressful time in your life

I smoked during my pregnancy. Drinking is not good. TRY to stop that. I smoked maybe 10 a day. My doctor told me the stress wasn't worth it to stop. But the drinking CAN cause birth defects. Talk to your doctor, maybe go to some AA meetings to cope, and some grief counseling. You HAVE to stop the drinking Rachel.
