My 10 year old stepdaughter still has difficulty washing/bathing and selecting the right clothes. She recently got her period and we are having great difficulty with her remembering to change her pad or even noticing that she bled through her clothes and problems with general hygiene. Since getting her period this has become magnified. Any suggestions on how to get her to realize the importance of hygiene? I have talked to her about everything she should be doing but she seems to ignore it and not care about her appearance or cleanliness. I do realize she is young, but I don't want her to the child that no one wants around.

Thank you, she is very germaphobic (I know this seems opposite) so perhaps telling her about yeast infections would get her to understand the importance more.

it sounds to me like you need to be more aggressive, get her into a habit of showering around the same time everyday until she does it on her own. Let her know the risks of not showering like infections and fishy odor. When you talk to her try to be relate-able by saying you once had a friend that didn't change her pads and she got a yeast infection. Poor girl but if her mom is not helping her thankfully she has you to enforce proper hygiene she will thank you later. Make sure she is fully stocked up on pads she might be embarrassed having to ask all the time. Knowing that she is going through make sure she has new underwear she might not be changing those either best of luck to you... also every kid is different you might have to try a few ways to talk to her that fits her personality
