Is it normal for my 12 year old son to sleep all night then when I make him get up at 10 (summer so no school) and he comes downstairs and goes back to sleep on the couch!! He's healthy, active and does well in school but I feel all of a sudden he's grown (literally in 6 months) over 6 inches and just eats and sleeps....is this normal for a kid to become a teenager OVERNIGHT?? It just seems to have happened like magic!

In fact, did you know there has been some discussion around teens functioning better at school if it was to start an hour or two later in the morning and go later in the afternoon? Why? Because teens seems not to do so well in the mornings, it is actually a circadian rhythm thing.

And being a teacher of teens, I can honestly say that they are often like zombies in the 9am class.....

What time is he going to bed at night? And yes, for a boy to suddenly grow 6 inches, start eating like a horse and being tired all the time is NORMAL. I have 2 boys and one has been through that and the other is still going through it. At the same time, however, I recognise their need for a LOT of sleep during this time and have them in bed by 9:30pm......but on occasions, they could sleep until lunchtime. The older one (15) is out of that a bit now, the younger one (13), not so much.

My kids went through the same thing - I think most teenagers go through a similar situation. They go from kids we can't get to sit down for two seconds to kids who all they want to do is sleep! My daughter was especially like hthis when she hit the middle school age. Now at 18 she just loves to sleep and she will tell you that as well. She loves to sleep! She doesn't have a medical problem or anything either. :) She is very outgoing and stays on the go for the most part but as soon as she gets a chance she wants "a nap". LOL! Growing rapidly takes alot of energy! He will be fine an this willl be the least of your worries I promise! :) Just take lots of photos and maybe you will catch him growing in his sleep! :)
