My daughter told me that she wants to dye her hair. Her hair is black and it's thick, should I let her dye it? I'm worried that it will damage her hair, she's been wanting to dye it for years now. What's your opinion on middle school aged girls dying their hair - and do you let your children dye their hair?

Blonde highlights would be permanent hair color. They have to bleach the dark hair, which also can be damaging to the hair. It's your decision as the mother, but I don't think I would allow that until she's older.

Her middle school doesn't have any restrictions on hair colors.
She wants to get blonde highlights and I'm okay with that.

First you should find out if her school has restrictions on hair colors. Some prohibit "unnatural" colors and will send the child home. If you want to let her have some fun with her hair, there are clip in colored hair pieces (color gone when you take out the clip), hair chalk (lasts until washed, can rub off on clothes, etc.), colored hair-spray (lasts until washed, can rub off on clothes, etc.), and temporary dyes (for dark hair, these may not show up well. Read the box for color duration). I would probably wait for summer vacation, to give the color time to wash out. I would not do any permanent hair colors or chemical processes that might cause damage.
