My son will be 14 this week and on his first "mall with friends" trip one of the friends bought him an expensive outfit. This is not a close friend, so the gift seems even more inappropriate. How should I respond?

Maybe the kid is well off and wanted to impress your son. Maybe the kid wants to get into the 'close friend' zone, or feels closer to your son than your son does him.

Was it a male or female friend? Either way it sounds like someone has a crush on your son.

I'm not sure what to tell you on that one... To be honest. If it continues i would suggest a visit with his parents or maybe ask your son to ask the friend?

We found out the cost through the store receipt, so no theft was involved. He says he honestly doesn't know why the other kid would spend so much.

Unfortunately, the theft idea isn't completely absurd.. In fact its entirely plausible. Is it possible to ask the friends parents about the purchase?

That does seem odd. What does your son say? Is this friend well off, perhaps trying to buy friendship?
