16 months suddenly waking up crying pointing to go into our bed

Until recently our 16 month old was easy to get to sleep, could put him in his cot awake, he'd sleep all night apart from if he lost a dummy but that was quickly rectified, and he'd sleep until about 6.30-7am. Suddenly he has become difficult to put to bed, keeps crying & pointing at our bed, and although I eventually get him to sleep, if he wakes up in the night, he's stopped soothing himself & will start the screaming & pointing to go in our bed again. I ignored him this morning at 4.50, and eventually after 15minutes he went back to sleep, only to start again at 5.50. Any ideas of how to get him out of this?

I usually let our DD19 months sleep with me and my DH, but after she falls back asleep I put her back in her cribby. Soon she will be a big girl and have her own toddler bed, we already know we're going to put it first in our room, then transition slowly to her room. it worked with my other children.
