17 & Pregnant

[deleted account] ( 20 moms have responded )

I am 17 & pregnant, the father is 22 years old. I wanted to know if there will be any legal problems for us even if we have the support from both families. I will be turning 18 in July 2015 and the baby is due in August 2015. I am scared only because I don't want my mother or the baby's father to go to prison or anything like that. Any advice would help.

Actually, Desiree, depending on where you live, it may not matter if her mother approves. It's not up to mum to give consent for her underage daughter to have sex. If a child presented herself to me (I am a mandated reporter) as having had sex with someone who was 22, I would be required to report it and it would be investigated. Period. Charges may or may not be laid, depending where you live, but age of consent is age of consent and parental permission cannot generally override that. It may reduce the consequences, but it doesn't take away the fact that this is an illegal union.

Well, she could. Doctors are generally mandated reporters. They would usually have to report an illegal sexual relationship if the age of consent is 18. I doubt your mother would get charged with anything, but he could. But this is something it is too late to worry about now - that ship sailed when the two of you decided to have sex. It's probably something you should have thought of then, not after its too late.

That's why I was trying to look up stuff in Arizona for her and the state can absolutely choose to prosecute whether the minor's parents support the union or not. Now...w/ the fact that the minor consented and the parents condone the relationship it's not 'likely' that they will proceed w/ a prosecution, but it is entirely possible.

Where do you live? I can't see any reason why your mom would go to jail and would 'assume' the only way the father would go to jail is if you live where the age of consent is 18 AND your parents pressed charges. If you have the support of your family and/or you live where the age of consent is under 18 it is not likely that any legal trouble would even be possible.

Why would you make something up? You would have gotten answers if you would have said the truth and that you dont know if you are pregnant.

So why would you post that you ARE 17 and pregnant if you aren't even sure?

Well if you aren't pregnant then don't have sex until you are over 18 to save all the headache.
You didn't need to make up a story to get an answer to a question though.

Thank you all for your comments, But i would like to see the responses i would get and i did. I don't know if im actually pregnant since it is highly not likely, but i was going to see the doctor incase it could be something bad.

Arizona is definitely looking pretty strict. so I would call a lawyer if I were you. Hopefully there will be no case given that you are almost 18 and you have your family's support.

I don't know. I could try and look, but I suck at Google... lol Your best bet would be to contact a lawyer in your area and just find one that will answer a couple of questions over the phone.

I live in Arizona where the Legal age of consent is 18, Well my mother told us if anything happened (if i got pregnant) then he would go to prison and she would too since she is a police officer and failed her duty as both a cop and mother to stop this. Although she does support me and my boyfriend, will there be any legal trouble at all? this is the only thing i'm worried about because I don't want to have my baby without any support or family to help me.
