Hi,
I love my son dearly but he won' t help with the household chores. He works as an apprentice for his father and does not earn alot, but will not lift a finger to help in the house. I get so mad I have decided to go on strike and not do his washing and ironing. I want him to do these things for himself but I suppose I have spoilt him in the past by doing everything for him, problem is I feel terribly guilty. I am alone in all this, its making me sad!!!.

Thank you for your responses, I am going to do that and be strong, after all it is for his own good. Then he may learn to not take me for granted and appreciate what I did for him before, but not now.

Like Evelyn, my boys have been doing their own...well pretty much everything except fancy laundry (dress clothes).

They cook for themselves (especially if they don't like what I'm proposing to fix) They do their own laundry, are responsible for their rooms (and, yes their rooms are a damn pit, but I ain't cleaning 'em!) They are required (house rules) to at least fumigate and disinfect their personal areas once a month, and to keep the public and shared areas of the house presentable. They clean their own bathroom, and each takes turns in the kitchen and yard.

And mine are 15 & 19. Absolutely no reason that young man can't 'man up' and learn to do some of this himself...

You said it, he is 19 not 10. Let his laundry go, let his room go, let his ironing go. When he asks why its not done tell him its time he learned to do this himself. My son is a lot younger and he knows how to do laundry, clean floors, do dishes, take out trash, pick up after himself, and oh one more thing, he sometimes waits on me for a change by getting me that glass of water or a snack when he gets one because he thought of doing something for me for a change. Its not a bad thing.
