1st grade grandson to start on vyvanse?

My 6 yr old grandson has lived w/me all his life. Kust moved out with his mother and little sister and starts meds for his ADHD tomorrow.
He has been a tough little boy to decipline or get to do what you ask. Family members and others think he should just always be punished. He just can't help it sometimes and has voiced this many times before.
He will start taking Vyvanse 30mg tomorrow.
What should we expect? He already is struggling with moving. My heart aches for him.

I am a school nurse and see many kids with ADHD. Vyvanse does seem to help. Side effects to watch for include, no appetite, talkativeness, abdominal pain (usually relieved by a snack or some Sprite), and insomnia. Give the dose as early in the morning as possible. One negative side effect is picking, and I see this in kids that are already pickers. For example if a kid picks at his nails or tugs or twirls his hair, it seems to get worse with the Vyvanse. Keep an eye on his growth and weight.
