I noticed last night that my 2 week old was starting to get congested. I'm assuming she is getting a cold, although she doesn't have a runny nose yet. She has been coughing randomly and her breathing has been disrupting her sleep. Every 5-10 minutes she'll start making noises like she's trying to clear her throat. And because her sleep is getting disrupted I have had to start waking her for feedings. At one point last night we both ended up sleeping for 5.5 hours before I woke up to feed her, and when I did end up waking her up she was ravenous. A couple times last night when I was changing her she started breathing funny and it freaked her out and she started screaming and crying for like 10 minutes. Is there anything that I can do to help her feel better? It's not in her nose so I can't use the nasal aspirator. Should I just take her to the ER? I'm so worried something is going to happen to her, like her getting/having RSV. (She is exclusively breastfed, so I figured she wouldn't get sick this soon. But my sister who still goes to highschool probably picked something up and gave it to her.)

Yes, being a new mom is exciting and scary! I was paranoid, so don't worry the moms are here to help :)

thank you. it seems she sleeps better if I have her at a slight incline, so I'll be doing that from now on, and we will be buying a humidifier tomorrow to help out. We live in a basement suite so to keep us warm we have been using a heater that just does a room (the people upstairs like to keep us uncomfortably cold). So it's probably a little to dry down here for her. I had her in the washroom full of steam a couple times today and that seems to have helped a bit. Thanks for the help :) It's very nerve wracking being a new mom, especially since I don't know what's normal or not.

I agree with Katherine, most newborns sound congested and they don't usually have a cold. Just monitor. If you want to try something to help, about the only thing you can do is try and feed her in the bathroom while you run a hot shower so she breathes in the steam or get a cool mist humidifier to put in her bedroom to help liquify her mucus. With babies, there's really nothing else you can give them or do for them to help. Good luck, it's hard having a small infant, hang in there! :)

It's very common for newborns to be congested. It will take a few months for it to clear up. I wouldn't be worried. They make all kinds of weird noises.
