@Mindi: When you're wiping poop off of a toddler's butt, it's pretty hard to NOT notice the consistency of it. Trust me, this sandy-type poop is very noticeable, because it's hard as hell to get the gritty bits off of their bum.

My son's was like this as well and still is. I went through the celiac testing, I tried gluten free, I went to a pediatric gaestronligist because his poops were always soft. His soft poops worked themselves out now that he is older. He gets sandy poop after eating bread, cheerios, etc. My advice is not to worry. Chances are that our poop is sandy too but we are unaware of it because it ends up in the toilet. You are just well aware that his is sandy because you are wiping it off his bum.

Research natural diets for mammals. If humans are eating what is truly natural to them, I doubt they'd have sticky poop they can't clean off. I just learned that giraffes, cows and rabbits eat the placenta after they give birth, but alpacas and zebras don't. Little things we ignore make long lasting differences.

If it was a GI bleed, you would know it. It has a very nasty smell. That alone will tell you something is wrong. So please don't jump to the thought of that.
It has to do with something he ate. My daughter has it from time to time. It's obnoxiously annoying. It will cause a diaper rash in a heart beat and it hurt them to try to get it off. If you can, get the easy stuff off on the changing table. Then place your little one in the bath tub and use the shower hose and a wash cloth to rise the rest off with luke warm water. It will help the rash feel better.

I had this problem with my son a year ago... he was having really bad diapers (gritty) and it was hard to clean his bottom which lead to bad diaper rash. Ended up he is/was lactose intolerant. It cleared up with HOURS of taking him off milk. He now drinks Lactaid and it's been fine ever since!
