My poor baby is constipated.. she passed a hard stool this morning and has been having issues for the past 2 weeks.. Pediatrician said to put Karo syrup in her bottle.. we have been but that seems to be the only time she goes, and I don't feel comfortable giving her the syrup in every single bottle. She is on similac sensitive formula, does anyone think it could be the formula causing this problem? I'd hate to have to switch once again but something has to be done about this :-( Any other opinions? We've tried moving her legs around, massaging belly, gripe water, small amounts of regular water.. Thanks!

Make sure you bring everything up to them, don't just bring up changing formulas because formula fed babies tend to have digestive issues vs breastfed babies. Bring up the other alternatives for the constipation.

Make sure that your ped is talking TO you, not AT you. There is a huge difference. Make sure your questions are getting answered and don't think any question is a dumb question, they are the ones that went to school for this and (hopefully) continue their education on this. You have to watch out for "old school" docs they may not be brushed up on the newer findings as time & research progress.

Thanks so much for your help! She has a Dr appt tomorrow, so I'll be sure to bring it up to them.

This could be from the iron in the formula, if your ped is not concerned about it then try not to worry too much. Mucus in the stool is usually from swallowing too much drool (from teething), post nasal drip (from having a cold and or allergies) and from stomach upset from what baby is ingesting. Your baby could be sensitive to milk proteins and may need to be changed to a soy based formula, this is something you should definitely should speak with your doctor about before doing it as soy is not a 1st choice for babies or adults alike.

How old is the baby?
I am surprised that your doc would recommended this over prune or pear juice mixed with the formula. Be sure you ask your doc but prune juice opened my son right up. This was AFTER he was 4 months old. Be sure, if you do the juice route, most importantly, make sure it is pasteurized, and secondly something that you will drink, otherwise you will be dumping your money down the drain.

Before 4 months he recommended using glycerin suppositories, if my son would not have a BM for more than 5 days or if it seemed painful when he had a BM.

If baby is older than 6 months, use pureed pears, prunes or apples. They work wonders!
