3-year-old afraid of other children?

My 3-year-old son seems to have developed a fear of other children, even ones he knows and has interacted with in the past. He is very sensitive to certain things and I don't want to make him worse by forcing him to interact with other children when he is clearly afraid, so I have been keeping him in and denying all playdates. My family and friends are starting to worry because that means that they won't see him for the holidays and they tell me they are worried about his development. Is this something he will grow out of on his own or is there something I can do to help him out more?

If you are avoiding your own family because you are concerned how your three year old may react? There is a problem. You don't have to force him to interact, let him play independently side by side another child. Have you discussed this with is doctor?
