4.5 year old son diagnosed with autism due to speech problems

My 4.5 son was just diagnosed with Autism die to his speech problems. The reason he was diagnosed so late is everyone told us they did not see him being autism as he is social, athletic and follows directions. His Speech therapists say his speech sounds like a severe phonological disorder with expressive delays. I am told by both his teacher and therapists he will eventually be ok but it will be a long road. Has anyone else gone through this? Little by little I am starting to be able to communicate with him and I have seen improvement in speech since last year but very slow growth.

I've been through the ASD evaluations and diagnostic process with my son, but he does not have the same speech issues as your son.

I do have a friend with an autistic son that didn't talk at all until he was about 10. It is slowly coming along with the help of therapists, teachers and lot of at home work. He knows sign language and has been using that for almost as long as neurotypical kids use speech. Have they suggested that to you as a possible mode of communication?
