4 cm dialated and not having any painful contractions?

I went to my doctor's appointment today and discovered that I am 4 cm dialated and 90% effaced. He said he figures I'll go into labor within the next day or two (tomorrow is the due date). I am having random, mostly painless contractions occassionally, but nothing that makes me think I am in labor...mostly Braxton Hicks type contractions. This will be my second baby--with the first, I was induced, so I don't really know what it feels like to go into labor naturally. My biggest worry has been how to tell when to go to the hospital, etc. So here are my questions:

If I am already 4 cm dialated, do you think I will just skip over the initial "not-as-painful" contractions and go right to more intense ones? Do you think they will just jump right in at 5 minutes apart, or will I still have several hours of farther apart contractions at home? I'll need to take my daughter to someone else's house once I realize that I'm in labor, so I am worried that it will start too fast and I won't have time!

I realize that everyone is different, so I'm just interested in what you have experienced/read about. This is a way of keeping myself occupied while I wait!!

Thanks!!

I was the same 4cm and 90% effaced with my second a week before I was schedualed to be induced. I made it to my induction date, they broke my water and my daughter was born 90 minutes later. My advice is get to the hospital at any sign of labor unless you want to have a baby in your car. My ob told me women who are that dialated pre labour go really fast. Good luck

Every body and every labour is sooo different. I've had 8 kids and on 'baby 6' I was 2 weeks overdue (that was a first!) and walking around at 6cm for a WEEK before anything happened! Of course I had the "45 min labour from first pain to delivery" and also on my 8th, water breaking and finally having to be induced 24hrs later.

Good luck to you! Hope it goes well and soon.

When I first went into labor with my daughter I didn't realize it. I was nesting and had completely cleaned and reorganized our basement so I thought my back was sore from that. And I had been having braxton-hicks for several days so I thought my beginning contractions were braxton-hicks. I finally realized I was in labor when I tried to go to bed. My back started hurting along with my contraction. I had back labor so my back was the only thing that hurt (no pain in my belly ever only tightening). We went to the hospital because my husband panicked and was afraid of having the baby in the car (only a 4 when we got to the hospital). But my contractions weren't 'regular' even up to delivery- anywhere from 2-8 mins apart. They tried pitocin to 'regulate' my contraction which never worked (I'm apparently sensitive to pitocin). Just follow your instinct on when to go to the hospital. You'll know when you no longer feel comfortable staying at home. Also your OB can give you a guideline on when to go as well.

Everyone is different but I was induced for my labour and I got to 7 cm dialated and the contractions were there but nothing major.it turned out my daughters head was stuck so thats why it wasnt very painful and i ended up having a c section after 19hrs!
just keep track of them have a person on stand by for your daughter and if you get really worried go into hospital.Good luck!!!!
