Hey everyone,

My son has had a cough for what seems like forever! It sounds like a croup cough and is really bad at night and upon waking. He has fits up to a half hour long some nights and has thrown up twice because of it. Not too bad during the day unless its cold or hes exercising. He has had a lot of colds so his dr keeps saying its just virus' and it will get better. They recently tried an antibiotic but it did nothing but give him horrible diarrhea for 2 weeks. We have tried ventalins with no luck either. Has anyone one else tried the ventalins? Does it take time to start working or should it start working quickly? He is seeing an allergy specialist soon who i will also ask but I was hoping someone here might have experienced something similar and might have some advice. Thanks :)

A lot of doctors blow of post nasal drip. I have had this issue since I was about 4 years old. Granted, if it is post nasal drip, it could be caused by any number of things. Good luck with everything, and don't dismiss post nasal drip.

Also, ignore weird posts like that previous one. I had intentionally left it up for management to see, but I see another mod deleted it. I have already dealt with it further.

Thanks :) I already reported shorty's comment, telling someone their child is doomed to die is a little sick. We have used humidifiers and hepa filters with no change in his symptoms. The thing is there is no wheezing or runny nose, itchy eyes just the cough. He saw the allergist yesterday and has been confirmed with an egg, pork and peanut allergy. They are going to do another test in September for more foods and environmentals. I'm hoping once I eliminate these foods his cough will go away. I asked about post nasal drip but his ped said she didn't think that was the culprit. But many people have suggested it, so I think when we go for our follow up this week ill bring it up again. The ventalins just dont seem to anything. None of the drs seem concerned since in all other respects he's healthy and thriving, it's just frustrating and scary for me.

Shorty, what is your issue with babies dying? For crying out loud. Please stop.

No your baby is not going to die simply from a cough. Have you tried using a cool mist humidifier in his room at night? Could it be allergies? I have post nasal drip after a cold or flu, and it causes me to have bronchitis, and a ton of irritation. I don't know how old your son is, but if he is old enough to be having regular food, stay away from anything sugary (this includes juices) cold, milk products if you can, and breathing to much cold air. Yes activity surely can induce coughing. Does he do better after a nice warm bath and breathing in all the vapors?
