40 or 45 minute naps are killing us over here!

Help!! My 4 month old son only wants to sleep for 30 or 45 minutes! It has been this way for about 6 weeks now. Once in awhile I will get a good 1 1/2 nap but its rare. He is stuck on the 3 hour feeding schedule because he eats, can only be awake for 1.15 or 1.30 then is ready to go down. So nap time is 1 1/2 and he only sleeps 40 minutes then lays in there awake the last hour sometimes. I know its about time to move him to a 3.5 hour schedule and he can go that long without eating, but because his naps are so short I don't see how that can happen. I need help! How to get him to lengthen his awaken time, and lengthen his nap times?! Its been 6 weeks of frustration! I've tried putting him down earlier and later but nothing seems to trigger a longer nap. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Some kids don't take long naps. Why not just let him sleep when he is tired and be awake when he is not tired? Seems like it would be a lot less stressful. Keeping a consistent bedtime is good, but daytime sleep can vary so much between kids and ages.
