40 weeks pregnant and scared about labor

I am so scared of labor? I read all of the stories and books on labor but I am so scared. Can anyone please help me become less anxious or help teach me techniques on how to get over the fear of labor? I would greatly appreciate it? I have some questions too: 1.) What does labor feel like? 2.) What does it feel like for the bags of water to break? 3) What does it feel like for the baby to crown and come through your vagina? Thank you for any help you can give me?

Well first of all, it's very unlikely that you will go from absolutely no contractions to intense, horrific, unbearable pain. Contractions gradually get longer and more intense. They start like period cramps, and get stronger and longer as time goes on. Remember to breathe - if you stop breathing, so does your baby. You will know you are in labor if the pains do not go away when you change position. For example, if you are sitting and you get up and start walking around, the contractions don't stop. My water only broke once on it's own and it felt like a little pop and a huge gush of fluid. It didn't hurt at all. Even when they broke my water in the hospital the other 3 times it didn't hurt. The best way I can describe crowning is a burning sensation. However, that part is over fairly quickly and then the baby usually just slides out.

The best advice I can give you is to realize that labor is a natural pain. Yeah, it hurts like crazy, but your body was designed to give birth. Your body knows what to do, so trust it. Try not to tense up when you have a contraction, it is much easier if you try to relax. Don't scream either, as this will cause you to tense up and just wear you out and you will spend extra energy doing it. It is normal to be scared about labor, but you can do it! Look how many women throughout history have done it! Good luck!
