Our youngest has been slow to develop an interest in printing or colouring (he's about to turn 5). He enjoys other activities that develop hand strength and fine motor control, so I haven't been concerned. He had the option to go to school this year, but we decided to just wait until next year.

One thing you could try is getting your son to print with his finger in sand, or a tray of corn meal. Finger painting is good for this too. Then he can learn the steps to forming letters separate from needing to hold and control a pencil. Sometimes when kids resist learning a skill it helps to break it down into smaller parts.

Also, work on other skills to improve his hand strength and fine motor skills - like using tweezers, stringing beads, playing with plasticine, etc.
