My daughter is 5 weeks old and the last couple of days she has been sleeping an enormous amount, barely eating and whatever she does eat she spits up and I think i see a white cap but I am not sure. Can it possibly be teething???

she definately could be teething - there's no "beginning age" to start. my son began being bothered by teething around 6 weeks...but he didn't get a tooth for a few months. his gums would swell up for a few days, he'd be miserable and chew on his little hands and then they'd settle down a bit for a week and then we'd begin the process over until they finally poked through. some babies are born with teeth so it's just a guideline as to when teething begins (they say the first tooth comes anytime after three months but again, it's just a guideline).

I agree with Bonnie, it doesn't sound like teething. Generally when they are teething they sleep restlessly because they are in pain.

I would keep an eye on her eating, is she having enough wet nappies, say 5-6 a day? if not you might want to take her to the doctor asap. Newborns can get dehydrated within hours and they need medical assistance, especially if she is lethargic. She might have a bug.

I don't know for sure, but I would say no. I think 5 weeks is way too early to be teething. I have heard the earliest of 4 months for teething and even that is early.
