Help! Has anyone had this issue? My daughter is 5 and has bad breath pretty much all the time...morning is the worst of course. I asked the dentist and she said to floss...so I started doing that but not as much as I should. But when I do, nothing really comes out on the floss. She tends to breathe out of her mouth a lot and I tell her to try breathing out of her nose. Any advice? Besides brushing and flossing...I don't want this to be an issue and it's just a matter of time before other kids say something.

If she is mouth breathing, consult your pediatrician or an EENT. At 5 she should be naturally nose breathing. Her tonsils or adenoids may be obstructing her nasal airway, causing dry mouth. Has she had many strep or ear infections? She may also have reflux, and the acid of her stomach could be the cause of her bad breath. In the meantime, have her brush, then floss, and brush again and rinse well. Also drinking water can help. Chewing gum with xylitol as an ingredient is worth trying too as xylitol has anti-bacterial properties. Trident, is the most well know gun with this ingredient.

When she has an ear infection or a sore throat her tonsils, which are just lymph nodes in your throat, can swell and even form lesions. Then the tissue where the lesion occurred can start to die off and make for very bad breath. Good luck, I am sure your pediatrician will be able to help you

Hi...thanks for your advice! Yes, she does get ear infections. We saw an ENT and they felt she didn't need further assistance with the infections because her speech is perfect...like tubes or anything That was almost 2 years ago...she is due for a physical next month so I am going to mention all of this to her doctor.
