My 5 year old has delayed speech, but is very advanced with numbers and letters for his age. He has just started school 3 months ago, and they are struggling with him. If he doesnt want to do something, he wont do it, no reasoning at all with him, he will just throw a tantrum!! Hes being assessed by different people to get the best help he needs, and school are being great. But I feel like a failure. Anyone else feel like this while waiting for a diagnosis???

honestly, from how it sounds, you are a GREAT mother, and are doing what you can... it sounds as if he is so advanced, that perhaps he needs to be in a higher grade... or in advanced placement. I couldn't imagine a child with nothing wrong being able to stay focused if its things they already know.

Yes I do agree he is deffo on the autistic spectrum.

His speech is coming on loads, and I can handle him and get him to do things he doesnt want to do. But school dont really know him that well, and are struggling.

I just feel like I have failed my son, how I dont know but thats how I feel.

School suggested buyng him an ipad to help, and it has helped in lots of ways.

I just wish I knew how I could help him do things he doesnt want to do, his teacher feels she is failing him coz she is planning for him, but his teaching assisstant is the one doing the things with him, as he kicks off when he doesnt want to do it. To be fair what they are doing at school is stuff he is well advanced with, so it isnt gripping his attention!!

I just wondered if there was anybody who could throw me some advice, give me tips, anything.....

Hope ur appointment goes well tomoz, and ur daughter gets the help she needs x

I am waiting to get my daughter in to see a psychiatrist for her maybe having OCD... I have known she probably has OCD since she was about 5yo, but i was always able to deal with her problems... easy peasy.... but turns out i should have probably gotten her into see the psych a long time ago... she is 8yo and having bad tics... so now i am waiting it out... her appointment is tomorrow... i've been waiting since tuesday last week... :(

I think, to me, what it seems like is your son may be autistic... my mother babysat this one little girl a long time ago who was autistic, she was a GENIUS, but when it came to making her do something that she didn't want to do, forget it! she would throw a FIT, and in her fit she would scream, "HELP ME!!!! HELP MEEEE" so if my mother took her to the park... good luck trying to get her to come home... I laugh now when i look back on it...
