Hi lauri..i am a nurse who works with kids who have adhd . My advice is that medication is a last resort after other options have been exhausted. Doctors are very quick to give tablets to handle behavioural problems but in my professional opinion there are other ways to try before medication...for example_ cognitive behavioural therapies to help a child to deal with certain aspects of life and situations he or she will come across. The number 1 thing is let them know that they are loved unconditionally ( which is hard when a child acts up in a social setting and you feel embarssed) also consistency in a child who has adhd is so important that you have to set limits and boundaries even if the child screams and shouts ...you must keep a low tone voice but firm at the same time. I have been on courses with parents to learn tools and skills on how to deal with situations which work ( these programmes work even if it takes a long time and patience-i have seen it with my own eyes ). So in conclusion there are food diets etc to try before meds...you just have to keep searching for the right dr to help you. I wish you all the best and am here to help if you need anything.
