We have a six year old in kindergarten that will be 7 in June. We opted to do three years of pre-school rather than him being among the youngest in his cohort, and we're so glad we made the decision we did. Although he's doing very well academically, he's struggling behaviorally. I created a communication chart to get feedback am/pm during his full kindergarten day, and he consistently gets a mediocre or "frown face"....rarely does he get a 'smiley' face. Reasons are for not listening, or needing constant reminders for not doing what he is supposed to. He likes his teacher(s), and I love the honest feedback each day, but to be honest, it doesn't seem to be working. I especially don't want him to establish a 'reputation' at this early age amongst his peers and teachers as it is a K-8 school. Any suggestions to help him be more successful would be appreciated!!

I'm not saying it would excuse him, but his teachers should be aware of and address this. Addressing the boredom would ultimately stop the behaviour. A teacher has an obligation to investigate options for him. So maybe have a meeting with the teacher and discuss what options they have for extending his learning beyond what they are currently doing because you believe he may be bored with the work he is doing. Talk to them about how they are using differentiation in their classroom for students who are ahead of others, not just those who are struggling.

IHi, Jodi;
Thanks for your response. I did think of this...although that still wouldn't excuse him from being disrespectful by not listening to his teachers a lifeskill we're trying to teach him. I just want him to be respectful too, you know?

Do you think that maybe, because he has had 3 years of preschool, that he is bored now? The work he is doing might be too easy.
