I had this happen to me actually. My top right canine. The baby tooth was actually wiggly and had popped off on one side, but the other side held firm (I couldn't even pull it out as kids have a habit of doing) The adult tooth pushed the baby tooth out at an angle. Didn't hurt or anything, but I did have to wait until the adult tooth came in all the way before they would pull the baby tooth. It's quite possible that they're hoping that the tooth with come out on its own (which is possible). If not, then they'll have to pull it.
That seems like an odd response from the dentist. This happened to several of my son's friends, and one of my nephews--it is actually fairly common. All of them just went to the dentist to have the baby tooth pulled. Did the dentist give you a reason they were hesitant to pull the tooth?
