Hi everyone! I just wanted some advice. My son is having major mental problems and we saw a psychologist today that wants to put him on prozac. However, my issue with him being out on prozac is that he already has suicidal thoughts and has tried acting out such things along with trying to harm others. He has more early set schizophrenic signs than depression, anxiety or ocd. He literally says he hears spirits telling him to hurt himself/others and sees dark shadow figures. He is also extremely destructive, especially towards himself.

Then I would strongly recommend a residential setting for him. If you don't actively seek help and he acts out on his impulses you will live a lifetime of regret.....

Hi everyone. I need help. For years I have been harassed by my kids father and his family through child protective services. This year my kids father is incarcerated and his mother is now doing whatever it takes to take my kids from me. Now I have a dectective wanting to question me about some new charges. I made a call to an attorney and she advised me to not speak to him. In the mean time, I’m searching for an attorney but I cannot afford one. This is taking long. And they seem anxious to question me. I’m so emotionally tired. I have not seen my kids for a month going on two months. I need help. Father was abusive. I left him and he tried to make my life a living hell. And now his family is doing that..... please help.

I am sorry! As a mom, I am sure this has been a challenge to walk through as you see your child struggling. I am a social worker and have worked with patients with mental health issues my whole career thus far. Because of this, I have worked closely with many doctors who would prescribe to patients such as your son. In my experience, Prozac could be helpful because there is depression in schizophrenia. Sometimes doctors want to start with the 'lower strength' drugs before feeling like your son would need something stronger, like an anti psychotic. The goal is to have patients on as little meds as possible.
Good luck! I hope this is helpful at least a little bit.

He has been in therapy for two years, and I did mean psychiatrist. The first place refused to see him and said that he needs to be institutionalized, but I felt that was too aggressive for him being he is only 7. He has tried to kill himself, his brother, hurts himself, says he is going to kill himself and others, hears voices and says they tell him to do bad things, sees dark figures holding knives and etc.

First of all, I hope you mean psychiatrist not psychologist. As a psychologist is not a medical doctor. Second, what other treatments and therapies have been exhausted thus far? Third; have you gotten a second opinion and has he ever been inpatient or in residential treatment? What do you mena by "major mental problems"?
