As soon as our little boy turned 8 months, he suddenly stopped sleeping through the night as he had for the previous 3 months. For the last 3 weeks, he has woken up between 30 mins and an hour after going to bed, screaming. He has been inconsolable and has only calmed down if we've taken him out of his bedroom. It has then taken at least 2 hours to get him back to bed which has always involved tears. For the last 2 nights he is crying as soon as we put him to bed.
We've tried leaving him to cry and he just doesn't stop and winds himself up to the point of choking. We've tried going in to let him know we're there and leaving again and it makes it 10x worse.
I should mention that he currently has between 2 and 3 naps a day depending on how early he has woken in the morning and he goes to sleep on his own with no trouble and very very rarely wakes up crying from those. He naps in his own bed in the dark, just like at night time.
Our health visitor says its teething. His top 2 front teeth have been coming through but 3.5 weeks of this seems excessive to me. Medicine/teething gels make no difference, and he's perfectly happy during the day. Another health visitor told us that he might be processing more of what he sees in the day which is upsetting him. Another said that he might be realising we're not there but if we leave him in the day he's fine, as he is when he goes for a nap.
Cutting his naps down doesn't make a difference, changing his bedtime routine doesn't make a difference, giving him supper doesn't make a difference.
I don't want to leave him to cry if he is in pain, and whilst I'm not really into controlled crying etc, I don't want this to become a habit either. I just want to know what is upsetting him. I also suffer from PND so I'm finding the loss of our evenings and the crying particularly hard to cope with.
I hope someone has experienced the same thing and can help us out!xx
