wait until morning. They will do nothing in the ER if the only symptoms are a fever of 100.5. Babies normally have a much higher temp than us as adults when they are sick. Unless he is extremely lethargic I wouldn't worry too much. There are usually nurse baby lines that you can call if you are considered as well. I am in nursing school as well as have two young children. My kids used to get fevers of 102-103 with ear infections and a few times I took them to er/urgent care and they just give them motrin/tylenol alternating. You can alternate the two if you are considered about the fever. For now I would just monitor it. Hope this helps!

Just to make sure I would probably call the dr's office if they have an on call nurse or doctor. They will be able to tell you for sure what they would want.

It is not technically a fever until it's 101 degrees. If irritable you can alternate every 4 hrs w/ Tylenol and Motrin. Push fluids, most important he/she's not dehydrated w/ the temp. Just watch for other symptoms pulling ears, diarrhea, not keeping fluids/food down. Can give tepid bath. Steam from shower for any congestion and saline nasal spray & suction w/ bulb for runny, stuffy nose.

Is there a history of ear or sinus infections? I would give him some Tylenol and take again in an hour. How is he acting? Lethargic, crying, grumpy? If he's playing and smiling, that's a bigger indicator than a thermometer. Best of luck with your little one. I remember those days all to well.

I agree with all the other moms on here to wait until the morning. Just make you sure you wait at least 10 minutes after he wakes up to take his temp. Apparently a baby's temp will shoot up right after they wake up, so if you wait you might save yourself an unnecessary trip to the ER.

Thank you, everyone, for your advice and kind words! Y'all were much more helpful than the nurse at the hosp. Baby has just been eating and sleeping all evening, which isn't normal for him at all. Hopefully he'll sleep it off and be back to 100% in the a.m.!

My 10 month old has had 9 ear infections and lots of fevers and with it only being 100.5 I would do Motrin, then 4 hours later Tylenol, then 4 hours later Motrin. Continue to alternate those every 4 hours and monitor the temp. It should go down. The doc may want to see him in the morning, but you'll save yourself a hospital bill. By the way, if you must go somewhere after hours, try an urgent care center before an ER. Saves money and keeps you from being bumped for more serious patients.
